IMAMEX--do you still live in Mexico and if so how bad is it down there?

I sounds like it's fucking horrible--death toll is nearing 50,000 over the past five years when the government decided to start doing something about the cartels.

    http://news.nationalpost.com/2012/01...l-nears-50000/

One night a man had a dream. He dreamed he was walking along the beach with the Lord. Across the sky flashed scenes from his life. For each scene, he noticed two sets of footprints in the sand: one belonging to him, the other to the Lord.

Looking back at the footprints in the sand, he noticed that many times along the path of his life there was only one set of footprints. He also noticed that it happened at the very lowest and saddest times in his life. This really bothered him and he questioned the Lord about it.

The Lord replied, "My son, My precious child, I love you and would never leave you. During your times of trial and suffering, when you see only one set of footprints, it was then that I carried you."

Shit's nationalized too! PEMEX all the way! So is electricity & water. I think the only things left to the private sector are telecommunications and that's all Mr. Slim's gig.

Yes and yes. I never know how to answer people who ask what it's like to live in Mexico or go to Mexico nowadays. They see these sensationalized stories and assume the entire fucking population is just brown people getting murdered. Shit's no doubt crazy in some places but where I'm from has started to chill out tremendously. Tijuana had it's share of headlines but that never stopped me from going back and visiting or going out and drinking. The main detractor for me going back more often is the border wait back(sometimes up to 5 hours in car and up to 1,500 people deep when walking across), and the fact that my son wakes up way too early for me to justify going out and getting shitfaced. My brother called me yesterday and told me that he's playing with his band at some house party and I totally want to go but I have to work at 10 AM on Saturday and the thought of working until four, taking care of my kid until he goes to bed then leaving and getting shitfaced and then having to cross back like at 3 AM sounds exhausting.

Anyway, sorry I went off on a tangent there. To answer your question, it's fine. I talk to people on xbox live from Mexico City, Chiapas, Tijuana, Guanajuato and a bunch of other places and we never fucking mention any of this shit when we're talking about were we live or what we do. It's just how shit is in some places.

That's really bizarre. I mean, 5 of the top 10 most violent cities are in Mexico. The Mexican government has literally lost control of certain territory near the border. Cuidad Juarez has 148 deaths per 100,000 people. Mexico was ranked the "most dangerous place to be a journalist." The Mexican police force was rated by the FBI as "a quasi-criminal organization" because of the scope of corruption. I just read a story about how 12 severed heads were found carefully bagged and lined up on the sidewalk last month.

I don't know anything about Mexico, but it sounds like a fucking warzone.

As per the last tally I saw, They had 4 out of the last 10 and Brasil overall kills it over Mexico per capita. But again, I don't know what to tell you. I can't argue with numbers. All I know is that I'm not afraid to go back to Mexico. I plan on going down to Baja California Sur later this year and I would love to go back to Mexico City and visit Guanajuato in the near future. The crazy thing is that my family is from the state of Durango and they recently went to visit family there and they could feel the tension in the air. Did that stop them from having a good time? Fuck no. Ever since I was a kid I've been terrified of the cops more than any fucking drug lord. That shit carries on to this day. I'll also tell you this, we would sometimes here about people getting picked up back in the day or shit happening to people and it would always turn out that they were doing some shady shit. Basically, if you're doing shady shit, it's going to catch up to you.

That makes sense because i reckon the police and the mafia only hurt people who are a threat to them and not your average jose minding his own business.
