i competed in the abu dabi pro 2 weeks ago in montreal and lost in the 3rd round in a fight i thought i should have won i was wondering if you guys could take a look at the vid and give me some advice on how i could have done better in the future.

Position before submission is how you lost. You let him get points by always going for the finish and giving up passes. You need to play spider more and scape your hips sooner instead of when he's mostly passed. I thought you looked good though.

Damn dude I love how you go for this finish. 22/23 wins by sub? That's crazy.

But I can't help but think that someone slow and technical could grind you down. You don't look like you're the best at controlling position. You were leaving a lot of space on top and not controlling and securing the passes. Same for guard in the first match: you were attacking a lot but getting countered. The MOMENT you start to get pressured in getting passed you need to scape your hips and recompose. NOT the moment they are establishing side. Don't give them an inch. And when you're passing, stay tight the entire time. Don't just explode and hope their jiu-jitsu isn't good enough to recompose.

If I were you then in the gym when I'm rolling with guys who aren't as good, I'd practice using slow, methodical technique. Don't just submit them over and over like I'm sure you can.

By the way what weight class are you?

thanks man. thats what my coach said. the new rule is im not allowd to sub anyone in class for a month just control. and i compete at 140.

so your saying that i need to be shrimping out before they even start passing. i should be doing it when they are just threatening with it?

Awesome we're in the same weight. Ok... so my #1 best quality in jiu-jitsu is probably that no one (no light featherweight blue belt) can pass my guard. I got my own problems, but guard retention is not one of them. It's pretty much impassable by anyone in my division. I defend the guard pass THE SPLIT SECOND the pass begins. My arms are framing, my hips are scaping out, my knees are shrimping in, and my body is realigning with them in my guard. I don't let people threaten me even a little. Like I said don't give them an inch. I also have a really good turtle in case my hips get killed.

i like that. thanks for the advice i cowboy way to much been always just hunting for subs. but since i just started training seriously again im trying to get rid of my bad habbits and become a more well rounded bjj player. instead of just a submission fighter.
