Freddie Roach Thinks The UFC Is Just Using James Toney To Make a Point

    http://www.cagepotato.com/freddie-ro...ney-make-point

Renowned boxing trainer Freddie Roach may not understand what this MMA jazz is all about, nor does he have much of an appreciation for the ground game (with the possible exception of Fedor Emelianenko’s armbars, I think they’re called), but he sees what’s going on with the UFC’s James Toney signing, and he doesn’t care for it. As he told Crave Online recently:

“I think they're using James as a way to say MMA fighters are better than boxers. If he fights a quality ground guy, once he goes to the ground he's gonna get killed. But If a guy chooses to stand up with James, James is gonna destroy him. That’s why they call him “Lights Out”. I really don’t think there’s one fighter in MMA that could stand with James.”

And thus, Roach exposes the great dark secret about the UFC’s latest maneuver. Signing Toney is just a ruse to make all boxers look inferior to MMA fighters. It is, at the very least, an interesting theory. It’s not without its problems, however.

For one, Toney relentlessly pursued the UFC – not the other way around. He showed up at press conferences, made several incoherent YouTube videos, and generally refused to go away. If Toney is getting used here, it’s something he practically begged for.

Second, if Toney gets murdered in his first UFC fight, all it will prove is that this particular boxer wasn’t ready for this particular MMA bout. We’re not kidding ourselves here. We know that Toney is a 41 year-old has-been in the boxing world. Beating him in a boxing match wouldn’t even prove that much anymore. Beating him outside his own sport is just something we expect of any decent MMA fighter who plays it smart.

If the guy chooses to stand and bang? Yeah, maybe then it’s lights out. Then again, maybe we find out how Toney likes being kicked upside his head.

It is unclear what the UFC is doing. They could also be trying to steel some new boxing fans. I am sure there were some fans of Lesnar that did not watch MMA but started to when they signed him and became MMA fans. There may be some hardcore boxing fans that have never given MMA a chance and will tune in to see Toney. They may then become MMA fans. If they throw him to the wolves, then Roach is probably right. If they give him a tune up fight or 2. Then they might be marketing him for some big PPV fights. We shall see.

Sure UFC is signing him to gain viewership, that's smart business. If you don't grow, you die out. If Tony is serious about being a MMA fighter he's going to have to train his ass off and get some help on learning how to deal if he ends up on the ground. Only an arrogant fighter ignores his weaknesses compared to the strengths of his opponent. I think Tony is capable of surprising the hell out of a lot of people if he can recognise the possibility of getting taken down and trains for it.

i'm pretty sure the ufc signed toney so that strikeforce couldn't. i remember that he said the deal the ufc made was laughable. and then next thing you know he's signed. i bet he talked to scott croker and co. and the ufc went, "shit he would be huge draw!" and signed him first.

remember people it's not about finding the best fighters, it's about finding the best draws.

lol proper boxing dosnt fully fit the mma mould, duck too low and your eating a knee to the chops.

even if you are Maywether came to the UFC with the best boxing in the world he would only end up useing a watered down skillset compared to what he would normally use in a boxing match.

Did anyone see the PPV buy rates from the last UFC and WEC?

The UFC is looking for PPV buys, plain and simple.

    The key to this is.
If he fights a quality ground guy, "once it goes to the ground" vs if he "chooses" to stand with Toney

UFC is doing it for the ratings that's it....
and for not caring about mma Freddie Roach sure does talk about it a lot..

They aren't going to get them from Toney. He's not even a draw in boxing.

Roach's mouth can be annoying. However, he's not nearly as bad as that douche-bag-wife-beating-alcoholic that is Jim Lampley.

That was what I was just going to say but instead of Douche Bag i was going to go with FUCKJOB. Roach is a great boxing couch but it seems like once the sport (boxing) gets compared to MMA the boxers all of a sudden get on the pissed off and start talking shit. That includes that FUCKJOB Lampley! Face the facts!!
