as someone recently converting from windows, Fedora has been my favorite distro of the 5 or so I've tried thus far. Simple. Nice.

Yeah it doesent come with nearly as much stuff as ubuntu and I dont think it has as many program in its depositories.

I havent been able to bridge my connections in Linux yet so I still need windows to do that.

I'm not going to bother with Nvidia drivrs in Linux anymore. Its always a huge pain in the ass and I end up having to constantly reinstall them whenever theres a big update.

You guys should really try OpenSUSE 11.2. It's so simple. The nVidia driver is a breeze, there is a repo already there, just select it and install the driver by selecting it in YaST and it will download and install. They just reboot and it works.

my plan was to try opensuse next

thats the one that lets you pretty much build your own distro right?

Yes you can, create an account and you add what you want and remove what you want and then download the image and burn it. Simples.

Fedora worked really good out of the box. There werent really any hardware problems until I wanted to install nvidia drivers. When I installed them they would only work if I loaded the last kernal version which I didnt like so I switched back to non-proprietory drivers.

My XP install on the other hard drive has become so slow over the years I have been using Fedora exclusively for web browsing and for listening to music. Ubuntu feels more like Windows but for me downloading the programs I need is easy enough so Ubuntu doesent offer and advantage for me in that category.

I really think whats gonna make the difference for alot of people when deciding on distros is how well it works with their particular hardware.

The ease of installing Fedora over Ubuntu has already made a difference for me but we are talking about alot of different computer combinations people are using out there.

I feel like I can install Fedora and get everthing I need(depenencies, chrome, songbird, vlc player) and install them really quickly since I have done it twice so far.

I exported my Chrome bookmarks from my windows xp install and imported them to my Fedora install.

I just wish game makers would make fuckin Linux versions so I could play my favorite games on the os that doesent get so bogged down and annoying.

I was thinking about what distro I wanna put on my other computer. I need something stable that works well with hardware. The problem with Fedora is theres alot of bugs. Opensuse sounds like it might fit the bill. Especially if it will play nice with my nvidia 8800gt without too much hassle. I hate having to go through too much trouble whenever I need to upgrade to the new version. Seems like it always fucks shit up.

Dude shit is as simple as selecting the nvidia repository in YaST and then just search for the nvidia driver and select it and click next to install it. Reboot and that's it. If you need to change resolution and that shit just use the nvidia configuration tool... it has a GUI so don't need to manually edit xorg.conf.

Hardware support is one of OpenSUSE's strong point.

What do you recommend for Opensuse, KDE or Gnome?

KDE all the way for me but I've used Gnome as well without any worries. If you're comfortable with Gnome then by all means use it.

I'm really liking opensuse so far. Mostly everything has gone really smoothly besides a slight problem with all of my ram not showing up. I'm pretty sure thats an issue of my bios not reporting it or something between the bios and the kernal because if I take 2 sticks of ram out I hear more swapping so I am pretty sure they are working, just not showing up in system information.

I am really amazed at the beauty of the default KDE implementation. I added some nice wallpaper and now I must say this is the most beautiful desktop I have ever had. Yast is definetly the most impressive package management system out of any distro. I'm still getting used to everything and I expect to still have little problems here and there but I am really impressed so far.

When I was installing I accidently installed grub on my windows hard drive which I didnt want. It turned into a learning experience because I was able to remove grub with windows recovery console by typing in fixmbr at the prompt. I reinstalled grub onto the right hard drive using the opensuse installation disc.

I'm still going to keep Fedora on my other computer. I guess I kind of like the simplicity of the gnome install on there considering theres only 512 mb ram on that computer.

About the RAM, do you have more than 4 GB of RAM? What's the system specification including motherboard model.

    abit ip35 pro

and I have 4 sticks of ram total, 1 gb each

2 of them are of the same make and model which I have in corresponding slots and then 2 more which don't match eachother. Tried turning up the voltage and that didnt work either.

I tried switching the slots around and that doesent work either. I still think they are working though even though they arent reporting so I am not too worried about it.

That's weird. Too bad Abit when out of business otherwise I'd tell you to try a BIOS update.
