Leagues is a watered down simplified Dota clone,

Heroes of Newerth is a much better Dota Game, more polish, better heroes, more balance.

Also league of Legends isn't free to play, there's limitations in gameplay and you don't unlock all of the characters unless you buy the "Premium version" it's basically a glorified demo.

If you still have the CD Key you can register it via battle.net and re download the game client similar to WoW, which is what I did with all my old Blizzard games.
