Thread: Gasoline...

    Gasoline...

When and what is it going to take to rid ourselves of such dependency on it? Are we all going to be in our cars, traveling and all run out simultaneously and look bewildered because we are unable to travel before we realize we need to do something?

People are sitting in lines for blocks (some running out of gas waiting too), fighting - yes physically with fists and shitz. The stores are roping off their pumps because there is none and it will be a couple of days before some have it. The recent hurricane in the gulf fucked up our oil supply.

I have a several cycling friends and one recommended a good one to me, but 50+ miles each way to and from work kinda discourages me from taking that option.

I think, in our case right now, they should maybe put a 10 gallon limit on all vehicles to avoid at least the long lines and so many running out all at once and fighting with each other.

    Any ideas?

Get rid of our dependency on oil? Unlikely.

You realise how many everyday things are made from the fractions of crude oil? Besides being fuel for our cars the products of crude oil include plastics, detergents, solvents, various lubricants (for cars - motor oil, grease, other lubricants), fibres (like nylon and polyester). Also used for making tar and asphalt, kerosene for planes' jet fuel, waxes, heating oil, petroleum gas.

I can't think of any more right now but my point is our society has a huge dependency on crude oil and I don't think this dependence will cease any time soon.

As for the limit idea does the extra minute or two to fill up a full tank really affect the line that much? I'm not sure how bad your situation with running out of petrol is so I don't know what to say.

Edit: Add rubber to that list. That's another product that is mainly hydrocarbon based nowadays instead of coming from natural sources.

    Thanks Bob (my father)

    heed the words again:
Mom's gonna fix it all soon.
Mom's comin' round to put it back the way it ought to be.

instead of searching and scrambling for answers on how to fix a resource that is being abused and exploited by evil people try preparing for real life, without your precious cars, your precious plastics, rubbers and chemicals.
prepare for mom to set us straight.
this era of over consumption and waste is coming to an end.

rob, I live around 50 miles outside of Nashville...I saw freaking headlines on AOL homepage about the "rumors" causing panic and stations running out. It's not rumors, i've seen the lines (haven't had to sit and hope i don't), but even the media is squaking about how perilous it is, ya don't know what to really believe.

And yes, we do over consume oil nd both you are right about our dependency on it. It's really incredible how many products we use many times a day without realizing it.

kingy, lady you are spot on about the man's consumption and waste. "they paved paradise and put up a parking lot".

the other news was enjoyable too :) thnx

easy way to rid yourself of the dependence, stop buying. ride a bike. not feasible in a lot of cases, but its the only way things are going to change.

I went by two stations that were closed Friday by the office when they ran out...they are still out. Bike riding is not feasible for me at all. My attire precludes me from that on most days, but even if i'm wearing shorts and a tank top to work (and i can if i so choose), it's over 50 miles each way. Talk about your buns of steel!

Now, the gov has ordered an investigation into price gouging...not that will do anything to help or serve any purpose, but i s'pose it shows some effort on their part.

try being the service station attendant at the station when everyone is pumping when it jumps 40 cents...while you're pumping!

ya, one of the little towns had a station charging like a buck and a quarter over the average cost in neighboring towns, now that's pathetic.

i was working midnights at a gas station when the prices broke 2 bucks a gallon. i used to fuck with people so bad about it. it never ceased to amaze me that people would yell at me like i was personally responsible for the prices going up.

Why should the government put in "some effort"? I don't get why people think it is the government's business to play daddy or safety police or whatever. I'm not a minarchist, but the way the government operates is: if something bad happens...do something. Because as long as you're doing something, people will at least be appeased because "they're doing their best".

Oh, everyone rants and rails against the government and politicians and how they hate them all, but it's these people that are appeased in the easiest ways.

The fact of the matter is...there are places that the government can do things and help out and there are places where it cannot and should not. Generally people should err on the side of caution because when the government gets its fingers in things it tends to fuck things up and it rarely gets it's fingers out.

One night a man had a dream. He dreamed he was walking along the beach with the Lord. Across the sky flashed scenes from his life. For each scene, he noticed two sets of footprints in the sand: one belonging to him, the other to the Lord.

Looking back at the footprints in the sand, he noticed that many times along the path of his life there was only one set of footprints. He also noticed that it happened at the very lowest and saddest times in his life. This really bothered him and he questioned the Lord about it.

The Lord replied, "My son, My precious child, I love you and would never leave you. During your times of trial and suffering, when you see only one set of footprints, it was then that I carried you."

unfortunately, price gouging on a virtual necessity for daily life happens to be one of those things that the government should stick its fingers in. im all for them staying the fuck out of my life as often as possible, but when gas prices shoot up 54 cents overnight because a hurricane may or may not damage oil platforms, its a fucking problem.

It doesn't even have to be on the federal level, but in cases of natural disaster, like a hurricane, they should foresee the damage and plan ahead. We, as consumers, would/could not possibly know of the possible scenarios as far as our oil source, but the government does.

I don't hate or rant and rave about the government and politicians...they're not all bad. I am a registered voter and am proud to do so and be able to. "We The People" is where they get the concept for "United" States of America and that is how I am afforded the right to speak my opinion on this. Amen.

    How much did it cost?

Moving closer to work isn't an inconvience in the states - often its an impossibility. This also makes foot power impossible in all but for a few places. San Francisco you can walk everywhere but god help you in moving closer to work unless you wanna spend a million dollars on a place to live. Sacramento you can move closer to work to an extent, (a few miles) - unless the area isn't zoned residential or its too expensive, but the public transit sucks, and its an urban sprawl so you can't really walk anywhere unless you're planning on hoofing 5 miles each way. So those aren't always realistic.

According to a BMA study around 82% of men who took part in the vicious fights were gay before they started and another 12% became gay during their first fight.

The remaining 6% took part in cage fighting because they wanted to beat up gay men.
