Thread: The World's Oldest Bible

    The World's Oldest Bible

The oldest surviving Christian Bible is from the 4th Century. This article is about how copies of this bible will be available online as of next year. This is great news for Bible scholars.

However, you probably won't hear any mainstream Christian talk about this oldest bible copy. Why not? Well I'll quote the article.

Handwritten in Greek more than 1,600 years ago — it isn't exactly clear where — the surviving 400 or so pages carry a version of the New Testament that has a few interesting differences from the Bible used by Christians today.

The Gospel of Mark ends abruptly after Jesus' disciples discover his empty tomb, for example. Mark's last line has them leaving in fear.

uh hmmm...back to topic. the "codex" it would appear has emerged from several locations and piece-mealed together? they used parchment, according to the article, but parchment could've been an animal skin.

Wikipedia has a page on it http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Codex_Sinaiticus

The interesting part is that the codex doesn't mention the resurrection of Jesus, which implies of course that the resurrection tale was a later addition.

It's telling that all the Christian's have stayed away from this thread. The other threads are full of "you can't prove that God doesn't exist" and the like. Well, here we have something equally as damning. The whole essence of Christianity hinges upon the resurrection of Jesus, and the promise that we too can live again. But here we have some writings about 300 years after Jesus that make no mention of the resurrection. A glaring omission, wouldn't you say?

And to prevent cries of "the missing pages just got lost", other early Latin and Armenian translations also omit the resurrection.

Once again we are reminded that Christianity is all about faith, not facts.

because there was no resurrection, ever. conspiracy or conjecture - either way, there is not now and never will be any proof to validate that claim. mary very well could have seen her son "rise" after his death, but it wasn't because he was divine or came from the "seed of god". no one knows for certain anything about the before we are born and after we die shit, all they/we can do is "hope" and have "faith" that we survive from day to day without killing each other off in the process of waiting for our day to come.

I think that it is a good idea for you to weigh in on the subject rather than just post a link. What do you say if Jesus was never resurected? Does that make you question your faith?

Shouldn't this be applied to everyone. If someone believes there is no god, shouldn't that belief be respected as much as we are required to respect your belief that a man born from a virgin was killed and resurrected for your inherent flaws.

I'm just saying you should moderate the xcept68 atheist bashing as painstakingly as you monitor people saying the slightest thing against christianity and calling it "bashing".

And just because i bash you doesn't mean im bashing christianity.

"It cuts out the post-resurrection stories," said Juan Garces, curator of the Codex Sinaiticus Project. "That's a very odd way of ending a Gospel."
