    Judo

Anyone in here compete in Judo competitions?

I did for about 10 years. Tried out for the Canadian national team and didn't make it back in the day. Just wondering if there are any fellow competitors out there.

I trained Judo as a kid and had 1 match. I won it but it was a real close one. After that I never competed because our dojo was shut down and the nearest was far away in another town. It´s a good sport for balance and cardio but the matches are a bit stupid, you can win just by throwing your opponent in a pretty way. I´m no expert though, I had a green belt.

I went to like 3 lessons, I basically just learned how to fall and one sweep from side control. I was pretty young and felt intimidated by it when I saw them doing flips and crap in warm ups so I quit. I wish I hadnt of though. I started wrestling in junior high and if you woulda stayed in Judo longer I probably woulda went to state or something in wrestling. Judo has the best takedowns of any martial art.

In MMA the judo throws are hard to see coming because they are unorthadox when you learn no gi throws.

Alot of people in the mma community hate on Judo, I think they are threatened by it a little because most mma guys just do BJJ and Muay Thai and want to think they have all their bases covered while they are in fact missing on takedowns.

I think this is the main misconception about Judo though. There is much more to it than just throws and takedowns. While "Judo as a sport" encourages a hiearchy of points for different takedowns (that's where Judo as a sport has evolved to is to just continually throw your oponent to rack up points), there are also points for controlling your opponent once they are on the mat, as well as Ipons for perfect throws and submissions which will win you the match before the time limit. Ipons almost being a lost art within the sport, yet it's all that is trained by the masters.

I think the MMA community has hate for Judo competitors because of the use of the Gui in MMA fights to try to gain an advantage. Since it can be used in different ways and it makes it much more difficult for a fighter to slip out of an attempted submission before it's completed.

I agree with you about not enough MMA fighters have trained with a Gui and as such do not understand how to use it to their advantage when they do fight an opponent who wears one. Saku vs Gracie is a prime example of an MMA fighter using their opponents Gui to their advantage.

one thing is the fancy front throws can get you in trouble against submission guys. On the other hand i love the throws where people flip in the air

I did judo for years and then took 4 years of time off and now all my friends from that time beat me up :) It's been a year since I started again and I have got a hang of it again. Still I'm not even near to match them in standup techniques.

I use to think judo wasn't great for mma but so many fighters have proved me wrong

I'd still take wrestling over judo though
