Empathy is typically seen as wonderful, central to cooperation, caring, and morality. We want to have empathic parents, children, spouses and friends; we want to train those in the helping professions to expand their empathy, and we certainly want to elect empathic politicians and policy makers. But empathy has certain troubling features, and questions have begun to arise about just how useful empathy really is and how it might be different from related capacities such as compassion.

^^^Well, how about this...I kick you in the nuts and I won't feel bad about the pain you're in.^^^ People that lack empathy are called psychopaths.

Watch the entire thing. He makes compelling arguments about how empathy hijacks our thought process and can actually make us less compassionate.

I dont see how empathy and compassion are not interlinked. Without the ability to understand anothers suffering how can one feel compassion. I get how empathy can inspire negative emotion such as hate & retribution and sometimes I feel its justified but that me but when it becomes a thing where the suffering is perpetual (like in Africa) then there a failure there to have empathy. So the argument falls on itself that he is making about empathy as in "putting yourself in someone elses shoes" is a bad thing.
