do people often find themselves standing when trying to break a guard. for more leverage? do you feel more vulnerable to sweeps and the like?

A standing guard pass can be risky depending on experience. If you're looking for leverage to break the guard, a knee in the crack works well and doesn't expend a lot of energy. Staying in tight and working that knee over the opponent's thigh could be one option.

I like people to stand and pass my guard, it makes them more vulnerable to be off-balanced. I tend to pass as low as possible.

ill stand for a little bit... and try to egg on the sweep.. you have to give up some control to gain a little more...

when someone is in my gaurd, i try very hard not to telegraph the sweep if they stand up. a few things i like to do are:

not to try the sweep the first time they stand up.

do NOT let go of the guard when you're doing the sweep untill you have secured the hook on the ankle. because if you comit too early to the sweep. you might find yourself with one arm locked and no guard to control your opponents body.

i like to control one arm when i sweep, and try to sweep into an armbar, if you sweep into a dominant position, thats great. but always think ahead, and always keep the pressure on your opponent to have to move out of submission trouble.

I like how it's a chess game...baiting and pawning. Maiking them think your're going for one thing, but really going for something else. I always say that if someone stands to break the guard, and they give you an ankle, take it and make them pay.

i find it too risky since i train with a few guys who like sweeps and leg subs. I prefer to stay close and rub the edge of my elbow on the inside of their leg (on the teardrop) to cause them to open the guard or can opener them but thats risky.

i learned the proper way to pass the guard from standing... from the jacre instructional found in the instructionals forum.

stand and keep your knees under their thighs keep your knees bent and then go for the elbows

as long as you have all the points down with a good base its a good pass. marcelo uses the standing passes where he lifts the guy up then proceeds to break apart the guard, i like that to but it uses alot of energy. my favorite is the basic knee in the ass and i put my both hands on their hip bones and press them to the floor then T out to break the legs. there a few option from there but i like that to break the guard. you just got to keep good posture and not let them break you down while you are doing it.

exactly pick them up and balance them on your knees in a way

not too many have that kind of leg strength to hold on very long

I feel much more confident standing up while passing, having a solid base helps and is crucial.
