It took me almost 2 years to get my blue but the first year and a half was off and on. A year is normal for a guy with some grappling experience who goes 2x a week consistently. If your school is following the Gracie curriculum you have to get so many hours in. This can be overlooked to a point if you do well in competitions. Have you competed yet?

the time is different for everyone. but if you are consistently subbing blue belts maybe you should just ask about a promotion.

Every school is different, but here's something to think about. Everyone with whom you train knows your ability, so the color of your belt doesn't matter. At our school, it's almost a badge of honor to keep your present belt for longer than expected. The newer folks generally struggle with this concept at first, but after having put your time in the trenches so to speak, once you do get promoted, everyone knows you earned it. The important thing is to train hard and keep learning. The belts will come.

that's the dumbest part about belts. they have nothing to do with who could actually beat who. i easily beat the black belts in my jujitsu class. but remained a white belt because i couldn't afford private lessons. boo hoo.

i agree with ^^. i don't take private lessons either...and i get tired of dealing with belts. so i just stopped with the belt system, and i just train without. To answer the threadstarter...i think it really depends on who is in charge of belting you...ask some blue belts how long it took them, what is being looked for and all

Don't worry about the belt, just train. Having a belt bring a lot of pressure with it as all the whites will be gunning for you.

Thanks guys. I do appreciate why people want the belt. It's nice to get your belt and to have your efforts recognised by your instructor.

If I was in your position I wouldn't ask about the belt but ask how he thinks you're doing and what you should do to improve. He might say something like "Your close to blue but you need to work on ..."

The funny thing is... I don't even own a "belt" nor ever believe in any kind of ranking system.......

It depends on how you're subbing these blue belts near your weight.. don't get yourself an ego now if you're keylocking the shit out of these people from side control. I got my blue in 13 months. You might be subbing these blues but aren't utilizing various techniques which you would need to demonstrate as your technical knowledge as a blue belt. Keep training and as Royce Gracie said "a belt only covers two inches of your ass".

There are some good post here. The one about keeping your belt as long as possible sound about right. IMO white belt is about defense/escapes and being able to defend well...white, blue, purple, survive brown and black attempts ( at least for a few minutes). IMO - Blue belt is about guard/sweeps.

My advise...develop your transitions, weak areas, start from bad positions, and enjoy the ride. It's not a race...it's jiu-jitsu. When you don't expect it you will know you earn it. Enter some tournaments and take your division...trying your skills on new people...see if you still have the edge.

It took me 3 years, going 3 times a week, but our school is very under promoted. Most blues in our school are rolling like purples and so on

first of all your not suppost to care about who taps who, my instructors made that very clear while I was in Brazil, it's bad ettiquit (sp?). your instructor will give it to you when he feels you deserve it and you must repect his wishes.

Serrajitsu119, It took me thirteen months to get my Blue Belt going two or three times a week. I had/have dealt with alot of hip injuries and fell into JJ as a form of rehab I suppose, But I digress, my younger brother got promoted in about 9 months after Winning his division in the Joslin tournment in Canada. If you feel your at a "Blue Belt" level just ask your instructor about the possiblity of testing you, perhaps compete let the resluts be your resume. Either way does the belt color really matter that much? Good luck

about a year...for myself instead of subbing everyone...I gave them pointers to fix their game...the instructor saw that I knew alot and was training to learn and not beat everyone...so he gave me the test...just make sure your instructor notices you and show that your learning
