May there be Mayhem in the cage
Jason Miller promises future prominence after losing ICON title
In a culture severely afflicted with Attention Deficit Disorder, Jason “Mayhem Miller” is the fighter to hold the public’s attention. His outlandish styles in-and-out of the confines of a fight place him in contention for the title of most entertaining figure in American Mixed Martial Arts. The twenty-five year old self-proclaimed “honky” resides in Kalihi, Hawaii. His legions of fans, known as “Mayhem Monkeys,” are apart of Project Mayhem: a plan devised to take over the fighting world one beat down at a time.
On Friday December 1, 2006 Miller embarked on his first title defense of the ICON middleweight title. He claimed his gold against “Ruthless” Robbie Lawler by stopping the Militech Fighting Systems Elite fighter with an arm triangle in the third round. On this night, he stood across from former UFC Welterweight championship contender Frank “Twinkle Toes” Trigg. Trigg had lost three of his last four fights and had not engaged in combat in nearly eight months. He sought to put Mayhem on the losing path—a path Trigg knew too well.
The road to being a champion is an unconventional one for Miller. His military-brat upbringing is lost in his ADD-fueled personality; a personality that strays from the quiet ways of Bushido. Miller began fighting when he discovered his limbs. At the tender age of sixteen, his brash personality and confidence in his street fighting prowess landed him on the losing end of a fight against his close friend and practicing marital artist. Being on the receiving end of pain prompted a rude awakening—learn how to really fight.
Miller’s first mixed martial arts bout: prom night.
He was the first in his family to graduate high school, but his only intentions for post-secondary education were on jiu-jitsu mats. Miller lived out of his car while pursuing his dream of fighting. He still rolls around on jiu-jitsu mats; this time it is as a teacher. Miller's dispenses his vast mixed martial arts and jiu-jitsu knowledge at Bas Rutten's and Randy Couture's Legends MMA gym. Miller trained jiu-jitsu under black belt Marc Laimon. He has trained with some of the top fighters in Mixed Marital such as Quinton "Rampage" Jackson, "The Huntington Beach Bad Boy" Tito Ortiz, and Josh "The Babyface Assassin" Barnett. It is Miller’s jiu-jitsu skills that propelled him from the back seat of a car to the biggest stage in American MMA.
On a five-fight winning streak, Jason “Mayhem” Miller challenged Georges “Rush” St. Pierre in the UFC. He dropped to an unnatural weight of 170lbs. Mayhem swayed to the ring in his trademark fashion sporting a Hannibal Lecter-style mask. Mayhem’s showmanship was instantly quelled by “Octagon Shock.” However, the bright lights of the show were not as imposing as St. Pierre. The French-Canadian utterly dominated. Miller admits he enjoys being punched in the face. His crimson face was offset by shining platinum teeth. The bloody smile on his face, while pressed against the cage, verified his claims. Miller was in bottom position for the majority of the fight and his only offense came during the last notes of the fight with a smattering of hammer fist punches after a slick jiu-jitsu sweep. At the end of the fight, there was mayhem on his face. And he loved it.
He lost a unanimous decision and has yet to return to the Octagon.
Miller rebounded back with another five-fight win streak that found him across from Frank Trigg. With an oversized afro-wig, Hannibal Lecter mask, and traditional kung-fu garb, Miller danced his way to the ring to the tune of “Kung-Fu Fighting.” His kung-fu was nowhere to be found, but his jiu-jitsu was on display as he nearly handed Trigg another rear naked choke loss. However, Trigg persevered and persisted, leading him to deliver a barrage of soccer kicks that stopped the “Mayhem” in the second round. Trigg’s return was Miller’s end.
Jason Miller claims to walk, talk, and eat mayhem. His Robin Williams meets Jeffery Dahmer persona attracts fans and his manic jiu-jitsu transforms them into “Mayhem Monkeys.” Despite the loss, Miller is poised to enter the Octagon once again. He vows his loss to Trigg is only a lapse in Project Mayhem—a project pushing for completion.
