My favorite lightweight backpacking stove is one I made in 15 minutes out of a coke can using only a pocket knife.
I've used it the mountains of Sequoia National Park on a very chilly night and it worked just fine.
It uses alcohol as fuel. I have used rubbing alcohol, denatured alcohol, and I hear Everclear or any pure alcohol will work just fine.
Alan Halcon invented the one can method. He is an aquaintance of mine and a wilderness survival expert. He is also the fastest guy with a hand drill fire starter in the world.
