After hearing on the news about the California man that died in the woods this week after he hiked out looking for help after his family had been stuck in the snow after making a wrong turn while returning from visiting friends in Seattle I wanted to remind everyone that emergency car kits can be life savers.
If the family had more water, food, and the ability to stay warmer they could have stayed together long enough to be rescued together. It's a sad story and could have happened to about anyone. So don't be unprepared.
I have a backpack in my car with essentials that I never touch that could save my butt if I was stuck somewhere for a long period of time. I suggest everyone do likewise.
A car kit should have:
Water - Lots. A person can survive for up to 3 weeks without food but 3 days without water and you're dead.
Fire making tools - A lighter, matches, whatever you prefer. For heat, signal fire, etc.
Food - The grosser tasting the better. Less chance of snacking on it when you are hungry.
A candle - In winter if you crack a window and have the candle burn you can have a nice heater.
Blanket or sleeping bag - If you keep extra jackets and clothes instead that's fine too.
Knife - You can make your own tools, clothes, or meals with a knife. Or jack someone else's j/k.
That's what I got as the first essentials. What did I miss.
