i usuaully use a traditional wrestling takedown or throw (i ike to think im pretty well versed in juduo throws) but i was wondering how many people actually usue some of the judo takedowns in a bjj matches and if they are successful...so far for me most of my judo has been in vain...but then again im prob not as good as it as i think i am :sifone:

i agree some people are shooters some are not but to get a judo throw
in a bjj match its all about timing .i think a lot of people don't try
them because they are too risky and if you get the timing wrong you could
end up giving your back.

judo throws are just about the sexiest piece of grappling other than sex itself.

dont be afraid to try a judo throw. Style is half the battle and if the throw works then regardless of the outcome you know you won

Judo can ALWAYS be used by someone who knows how to use it. In any form of fighting you CAN'T be afraid . . . especially of losing position. That is a risk you have to take to advance your knowledge. With MY judo, we train with other styles . . . we have wrestlers and judo guys go into the square and have take-down matches. I think it really helps with fluidity, sprawling, etc. It makes you aware of other more basic techniques and how to counter them . . . both the wrestlers and the Judo/BJJ guys improve exponentially. It makes you use realize that both forms of take-down are very similar . . . whizzers and counter sweeps are very much the same.( for example)

Alot of the reversals in Judo are great for BJJ guys that don't really know double-leg takedowns . . but try them anyways. I see alot of guys going in for the shoot like Royce Gracie or something . . . you know sloppy and like they are afraid of contact . . . always looking for the counter, rather than the attack. When you make the decision to go for a sub. or a shoot you've gotta go 100% or you leave yourself open.

Yo, NINJASHOES where do you train out of in Seattle?

I like Judo throws and wrestling/GRECO-ROM/PANC. takedowns . . . I think they are all useful, I think alot of people don't pay enough attention to the Judo throws, especially in MMA, it is a tool that can easily sway a match in your favour. It's good to be familiar with both, they help counter one-another's style. When people emphasize too much focus on the upper body you can DROP and SHOOT. In Judo you get alot of techniques that counter wrestling techn. (split-throws, reversals, counter-dumps,etc.).

I dont train right now Im just an MMA fan. I sometimes grapple with buddies and have challenge boxing or wrestling matches.

I did wrestling in High School and had a couple Judo lessons. Anything other than that is just practicing with friends.

Where did you take you class of Judo.

You should come to my gym try it out. Coach would probably let you try it out for a week or so before paying, see if it's for you. There is also Muay Thai there as well. $60.00 a month for MT, BJJ, and JUDO, not a bad deal at all, I was thinking of going back to AMC again they are WAY better but FAR away, and like 2x as much $, I heard Ivan Salaverry is starting his place soon, it's downtown I need to check it out, he did alot of the training at AMC.

I use Judo throws/takedowns almost all the time. The problem is that I have to pick and choose wisely because the rules are different between JiuJitsu and Judo. In JiuJitsu there are no penalties for hand placement or hip blocking, etc. There is a strong Judo program where I train, so there is a large influence that carries over to the JiuJitsu. Judo takedowns are what we focus on. Although we teach wrestling takedowns, this is not the emphasis. Generally what I see is the newer students trying to focus on wrestling takedowns because they think they are simpler to learn. But once they begin to master the Judo throws, they see the light.

Judo throws are great if you have a good back defense and can attempt them without fear

You are correct, sir. There's a lot of throws I won't do because I don't want to give up my back. But there's a lot that can be done without giving up your back.
