I have a laptop that I like to use once in a while instead of my PC but I have had some trouble recently with getting a Internet connection.
I have 3 different Ethernet cables which have all worked in the past few weeks but now none of them are working apparently, or something else is wrong.
I connect to my cable modem and then to my laptop but I can't connect to Mozilla or IE for some reason. I have tried numerous times and get the same "Server not found" message every time.
Here is the question: Does anyone know the command prompt that I can run to possibly get connected? My friend showed this to me once but I forgot what it was. He unplugged the cable from my laptop which resulted in losing the connection, plugged the cable back in and typed in a command that connected me again.
Start>Run>(command?)

Only thing I can hazard a guess on is:
Start> Run> cmd> ipconfig /release> ipconfig /renew
If this doesn't work some cable providers (Comcast etc.) will bind the MAC address of your network card to your IP address, so you may need to hook up your laptop and then reset your cable modem.
Maybe this?
Windows XP/2000/NT – Click Start, Run, type ‘cmd’ (without the quotes) and click OK, to open a Command Prompt window. In this window type ‘ipconfig /all’ (without the quotes) and press Return. This should return some information like:
Ethernet adapter Local Area Connection:
…
Physical Address. . . . . . . . . : 00-04-76-9E-D2-35
LOL.
what's funny? did you have it figured out already?

so you're running the cable directly from the modem to the network card on the laptop? you will need to make sure you're using a "cross-over" cable instead of a regular network cable, as most cable modems don't auto-detect this.
a cross-over cable is different from a regular ethernet cable in that a few wires are crossed... pretty much the same way a null-modem cable has to have its TX and RX wires crossed compared to a normal serial cable.
another thing you can do instead of using a cross-over cable is using two regular cables and a hub(or switch).
plug one cable from the cable modem to the hub, and the other from the hub to the laptop.
it's likely that your regular computer (unless you're connected with USB to the cable modem) has a network card that is able to automatically switch it's internal wiring paths based on what sort of cable you've hooked up.
