Hey guys, i've been thinking of getting a laptop recently and was wondering how good the new Intel Core 2 Duos are compared to the older Core Duos and the Athlon64's. Im basically wondering if it is worth paying the extra cash for a macbook with the Core2 Duos or a Windows based with a better everything else.

i would be using this computer for graphic design at school...so speed in rendering would definitely help.

Much better than anything AMD has right now. I'm talking about the Intel Core 2 Extremes and the Intel core 2 6800s.

You need an AMD™ education class.

Nope. Don't upgrade right now. A lot of new technology is coming out early next year, so the CPU prices would likely go down. Also, quad cores will come out before next Summer so I suggest you should lean towards that...if not, then by that time, the Core 2 Extrme or E6800 will be a TON cheaper by then.

I still have an AMD proc on my motherboard right now. I don't see AMD winning the performance crown back from Intel until the next time AMD decides to redo their core architecture. With the new AM2s that AMD pushed out, they didn't do much at all. All they did was increase the clock speed and moved up to DDR2. Intel, on the other hand, did their homework. They've been spanked by AMD ever since the first Athlons came out 6 years ago. Ever since Intel moved their headquarters to Israel, they've learned a lot from the rather talented engineers over there...and that's when the Pentium M was born (their power-sipping mobile CPU) architecture, which is what the new Intel Core 2 Extremes and E6800 are based out of.
The Intel Core 2 Extreme uses so little power and generates so little heat that the processor will run under load for FOUR hours without the fan being plugged into the motherboard. Oh, yeah, and don't confuse the Core 2 Extremes and E6800s with the Core 2 Duos. They're completely different processors.

Anything of the new gen including X2 would be good, but core 2 duo pretty much destroys everything on the market. The thing is there isn't all that much of a need for it if you're not gaming unless you have the extra money. In which you go for it, with the best deal being the e6600 imo. You could be running everything at once and your cpu usage will still be low as hell and speeds and response times are just absolutely ridiculous. Supposedly the x6800 (the fastest cpu on the market right now has the power 4 processors)
As with the macbook I don't know much about those or if they come with core 2 duo at all, but if you find a core 2 duo centrino that's something you might want.
About the operating system's go with windows for sure, vista preferably.
I'd wait till Windows Vista comes out (which is soon) before getting a new PC. There are some that come with an upgrade coupon but that rarely goes well.
