I know you are a established blue belt ranking..............

I had a question.............

when someone's got you in side control what's the best way to either counter or escape it?

I've subbed someone being in someone's side control with an armbar if was pretty awesome...... i've only nailed that once though.......

Hey Rez. When stuck in side control I just try to get guard back with a couple of different techniques such as shrimping out and diving a knee back in between their legs, pinching and rolling them up on top of me and pushing the untrapped leg back into my guard. If they are blocking the hip so I cannot dive back in, I will walk my legs around to a 45 degree angle and then pass my inner leg (the one closer to them) under my outer leg to turn on my stomach. You then put both hands on their hips to keep them away and lean your upper body on to theirs to one side and try to take the back.

The only sub I usually really try from being side mounted is typically a kimura if I can get ahold of an arm but without a base it usaully just leads to a scramble where I will try to get better position.

Hope that helps.

just flip around and get up, they wont take your back unless they are real quick

well when someone has me in side control and i think im able to buck them, ill turn in the same direction that there head is pointing. sometimes i can get it sometimes i cant. but most of the time im able to create enough space to get to my knees and stand up.

usually ill move to guard i like to use forearms to the throat and knees to the mid section.

but the key is to never stop working, part of the defense of grappling is setting up an offense. constantly put them in submission danager so they think twice about there next move.

iv never been able to pull off an armbar from being in someone else side control, its pretty difficult cuz you need to get a leg free....

Remember that many subs you can get from side control are the same even though you're on the bottom, in someone else's side control. Some are easier than others and likewise, some are more difficult. Take a key lock for example. You might not be able to get the submission, but you can surely pull off a reversal.
