Fighter talks X-Mission, Couture, MMA
Two-time open-class black-belt Jiu-Jitsu world champion (2004-05), Ronaldo Jacare is now an MMA fighter – as he has already managed to make some headlines. But this weekend the 2005 ADCC champion will put his MMA career on hold. On November 17th, Jacare faces Randy Couture at the X-Mission championship, the new event produced by Ricco Chiaparelli, the creator of Sub-X. Right before the weigh-in, GRACIEMAG.com woke the champion up and had this little interview with him. Check out what he said:
What were your preparations for this fight like?
As it’s a submission grappling fight, what I did was to intensify my ground training and relax the standing part of my MMA training. But my training is pretty much the same as it has always been.
You focused on MMA and didn’t even compete in the World Championship this year. Why did you accept this submission grappling fight?
I accepted it because I love the sport. When I found out he had accepted the fight, I certainly was not going to turn it down. Specially against him, a great MMA champion.
Will the fact that Couture is originally a wrestler be of help or detriment to your grappling game?
He is a great fighter and will always make it hard for anyone, in the same way that I will make it hard for him, for my having arisen from Jiu-Jitsu. He will make it hard for me with his wrestling technique. I hope it will be a lively fight that pleases the spectators.
Do you have a strategy for beating him?
I always have several strategies. I have strategy A, B, C and D. The question is whether they will work come fight time.
After X-Mission, what are your plans?
After X-Mission, I will fight in Jungle Fight, but I don’t know against whom yet.
