I hear a lot of negative comments about Roy Jones now adays, but I chalked them up to the fact that his defeats are so fresh in everyone's memory. But it got me thinking about how it will effect how Roy Jones (who, for my money, was the best fighter of the 90's and probably the best fighter of my generation) will be remembered.

"Roy Jones has ruined his legacy"
"He has tarnished his name"
"Roy was overrated anyway, Tarver exposed him"
ECT ECT ECT

A rough 2 years in a boxer's career does NOT deminish over 15 years of being unstoppable including such impressive feats as winning an olympic Silver medal (rightfully a gold medal), multiple world titles in 4 different weight divisions, victories over some of the best fighters of our generation (James Toney, Bernard Hopkins) and staying unbeatable (besides the Griffen DQ) as a pro for 15 years. Not to mention his insane physical abilities and what he did in the ring. Roy Jones was one of a kind. Yet by the way most boxing fans are talking, none of that ever happened. Muhammad Ali isn't remembered for his fights agaisnt Holmes and Berbick. Ray Leonard isn't remembered for his lopsided defeats against Camacho and Norris. No one remembers Robinson as the shell of his former self that fought into the mid 60's. But willl people remember Jones for the Tarver fights?

I loved watching him fight but I always felt he was over rated
he seemed to live off those two big wins from over ten years ago for the rest of his career, I was always annoyed when he fought journeymen all the time
I think he will be remembered as a top fighter but I wouldnt know where to rank him among greats like Charles or Walcott or Moore

Roy Jones is overrated. His biggest downfall was being in a weight class with not much top level contenders. His highlights are great and exciting but other than a few quality wins most have been against B and C level comp. He should of made the move up or down while still in his prime and we would of then known what type of champion Jones really was.

His mistake was staying at Light Heavy, should have went back down, and not fighting Hopkins when Hopkins was a Hot named fighter.

People say he fought nobodys

He just made them look like nobodys

Y'all must've forgot

No. Seriously, I think he is among the most talented ever. His reflexes and power were off the charts. He stole techniques from his game cocks and successfully used them to knock decent fighters out. He just never had a rival to market himself against. He should have fought B Hop but he never changed from his stance of, "60/40 and I'll kick yo ass!"

Yeah. I know what you mean. I don't think of him as a power puncher normally but he did KO a lot of guys that don't normally get KOd so I put that in there. It might have been his quickness and accuracy more than power that knocked them out though.

the gamecocks part is so right.

ive seen him in a lot of game roosters magazines and he's always posing with top breeders. he's very well recognized in the sport.

His win over B-Hop is not that impressive because it was too early in both of their careers. Roy will be remembered as a great fighter who never tested himself. He fought Toney and won and he deserves credit, but he did nothing else. Fought Ruiz at HW, that was a joke. If he would have rematched B-Hop or Toney, he would be remembered as one of the greatest ever. B-Hop has a greater legacy than Roy.
