After his dominating win over Carlos Baldomir to capture the WBC welterweight title, Floyd Mayweather Jr. took shots at the legacy of Oscar De La Hoya. Mayweather told the media in Las Vegas, that he is planning to retire after his next fight, and will go forward with his plans even if De La Hoya is not the final opponent. He attacked De La Hoya for his performance against Bernard Hopkins in 2004, claiming that after Hopkins knocked him down from a bodyshot, De La Hoya refused to get back.

"Oscar De La Hoya will never go down as a legend like I will," Mayweather said. "When he fought Hopkins, he laid there. You telling me you can meet the mat, but you can't get up?"

Mayweather said that if De La Hoya wants to make a fight, it has to be on his terms - and not the terms of De La Hoya. History has proven that no fighter has been able to overpower De La Hoya when negotiating a fight, and few give Mayweather the upper hand in receiving "his terms" if the fight happens.

"It's got to be on my terms, or the (De La Hoya) fight won't happen. I'll fight somebody else, and it's adios, amigos."

Mayweather is trying to provoke De la Hoya into a fight. Although Mayweather may ultimately end up with a better record, his legacy and love from the public will never compare to that of De la Hoya. De la Hoya is a living legend and the best thing to happen to boxing commercially since Mike Tyson.

That very well may be true, but Mayweather is a much better boxer IMO. He will go down in history as the better fighter if he keeps up what he is doing and doesn't get too cocky. I truly think Floyd would give DeLaHoya a boxing lesson if they fought though.

commercial success is de la hoya's legacy, i never forgave boxing for when whitaker threw more punches, landed more punches, and had a better connect ratio, and they still gave de la hoya the fight, de la hoya is good but nowhere near his hype

i usually hate boxers who talk alot of shit about opponents, but the thing with Floyd is he always backs it up, so i see him out punching ODLH, but he doesn't need to provoke everything the way he does...

Man, I also cannot stand d00ds who talk trash but Mayweather does back it up. His last fight though absolutely bored the shit out of me. Sure he put on a boxing clinic and displayed his speed but fuck! The fans want to also see some excitement...that is also what we pay for. I love skills being showcased but I also want to be entertained and Mayweather sure bored the hell out of me...

For all Mayweather's talent, he sure can't get a grip on how to make people want to watch him. At least Oscar has that part down.
