Hey guys, I've been using 16oz gloves up until now, and theyre fine for the bag, but they're quite wide for my narrow hands. I want to get some lighter, smaller gloves for pads and sparring.
I'd like to get gloves that would correspond with regulation weight for my weight class in competition.
What size gloves would you wear @165 +/- 5lb? 10oz?
Do all the brands generally have the same dimensions? I don't have big meaty paws, and I'd like a glove that fits my hand better.
Also, are there different gloves for muay thai than boxing? Different distribution/density of foam, or flexibility thats more conducive of clinching?
My first inclination is to just get what ever fairtex or twins is selling, what's the difference between the two? I've heard Fairtex uses stiffer (presumably thicker) leather, and the twins have wider cuffs. The Twins are quite a bit cheaper...
Finally, any recommendations for where to buy a pair on the cheap?
Best price I found was on ebay for the Twins, and it was about $70CND shipped.

i would get a pair of bag gloves for hitting the bag - means your gloves will last longer. i wouldnt go below 14's for sparring cos your just gonna piss off your sparring partners. as for brand twins and fairtex are about the same i seem to be getting 6-9 months out a pair of gloves. current pair are 16 oz twins.
Are you sure that your gym will let you spar in anything smaller than 16oz? I know 16s suck because they're too big and you feel slower but at my gym it's a safety issue and we have to wear 16oz gloves for sparring. Anyway after a few months wearing 16s when you go back to 12s to fight you'll feel a lot faster.

Thanks for the advise guys. I'll ask my coach how light I can go and still spar. It's not so much the weight as it is the size, my 16's are too big and have too much room in inside and the bulk makes it more difficult to wrestle for the clinch or slip punches between guards, ect, but on the other hand I'm sure that forces you to improve technique.
Are there different sizes for each weight of glove? I only ever see the weight listed.

I'll ask a pretty stupid question but you are wearing hand wraps right?

Yes :)
These gloves are just really wide compared to the width of my palm.

Just wondering because my 16s are really wide but my hands fit in well so they're not loose. Of course not as well as my 12s but good enough. My 16s are annoyingly wide so I understand where you're coming from.
Did you end up asking your trainer what the guidelines for sparring gloves is?

Yeah, he said don't got below 14oz. I tried on his 14oz fairtex gloves and they fit MUCH nicer, at least an inch narrower across the palm. A lot of the guys at the gym have "Green Hill" brand gloves and say they're pretty good, any comments on that brand?
I'll probably just go with what ever reputable brand I can find cheapest and just use my old 16's on the heavy bag.

14s sound like a reasonable compromise. I haven't used Green Hill gloves and tbh haven't heard of them before.
Using your 16s on the heavy bag should be good so you can develop some speed when you switch to your 14s.

fairtex gloves are snug and harder. i like twins better but most of the twins gloves are bootlegged and they have a different feel to it like how tight it is unless you get it from the factory
