You feel like or you are losing weight..?
Long distance running is okay if you wanna be a long-distance runner, but hill sprints (and sprints in general) have been shown to give as much bang for your buck as distance running in boosting metabolism and fat-burning. The second bonus is that they develop good explosiveness in your quads (compared to distance).
Distance running has also got the pleasant side-effect of making your muscles shrivel up so you look like a Somalian

Hill sprints destroy your knees. Ask Bas Rutten.

i do hill sprints when i need to get in shape for a fight , there is a very steep hill near where i live take about 1 minute to sprint to the top then jog/walk down. do it 3 times a week and add an extra 2 sprints on every time. didnt do it before my last fight witch was short notice and gassed out very bad and lost. imo its the best thing for cardio & weight loss. 100m sprints on flat land is very good also and less painfull for the legs
Distance running is useless. Any sort of interval sprint will be great for losing weight. Although going up and down hills does seem like it would be harder on your knees.
How can doing short distances be that hard on your knees? I would think that running on concrete for miles everyday would be way worse than a short distance up a hill a couple times a day.
How about running stairs?

if you run DOWN a hill you're doubling the impact on your knees, which is bad. Sprinting UP a hill though actually shortens the distance your feet travel, so it would have even less impact than running on the flat.
I have a local park where there's a decent flight of stairs going up the side of a small grassy hill, and I spend a lot of time either running up the grass side or up the stairs with no problems at all. It's only if you come pounding back down again that you're potentially putting more strain on your joints.

Sprints in duration from 30 seconds at 100% to 2 minutes at 80%+ are way better for cardio AND fatloss than endless distance running. Distance running is good for muscular endurance and thats about it.
Basic physics says you have to use energy when moving mass up an incline. Here's a simple online calculator FWIW.

Moving your arse around requires energy, period.

Hill sprints are great for conditioning and weight loss. If you're in an area with high hills/low mountains long walks are also great. Fuck long distance running, worst form of exercise there is.
Here's a challenge: whenever you're outside and see people jogging, see if they're smiling. They NEVER smile. Because it sucks.
