Windows if you are a gamer (PC games are written for Windows *shrug*) or computer newb.
Linux if you are a hacker or hardcore geek.
Mac if you are a multi-media freak.

Linux is best, but it takes a long time to learn it.

Windows XP user friendly and most compatibel with other hardware and drivers, software.
Also nice look.
Vista will rock with DX 10.

Hey, I just got turned on to this forum.
MMA & Tech in one forum? Pretty cool! We're narrow demographic ;-)
I use Ubuntu linux primarily, but I'm a Windows SysAdmin professionally.
I am married to a handful of Windows apps (games, but mostly audio & DVD stuff) but even in WinXP I try to use open source apps whenever possible. (Firefox, Gaim, GIMP, OpenOffice, etc.)
It can be hard to explain "Free as in speech" to someone that just steals Windows anyway, but imagine NEVER having to worry about getting a virus or spyware. Never having to pay for software. Never being locked into one vendor.
Got a lot of $$ to waste, sure, go buy a Mac, theyre great. Im not spending 2x the $$ on an underpowered machine...
Linux runs on your old machine just fine, and 95% of people use computers for communication primarily, which doesnt require much of any horsepower.

Windows is a must have, but Linux is good if you want to try alternatives. I suggest getting Ubuntu distro if you're trying out Linux. It's fast and it's a not too hard transition from Windows.

DOS on an 8088. you can go take your "top of the line" machines and stuff them up your asses. this is hardcore shit. its obso1337 and not for n00bs.
on my athlon 64, i usually use linux (debian is my fav) since i never really play PC games any more. (theyre pretty much all windows-only)

the nice thing about linux is that it's all nice and free/open-source so you dont have to worry about getting caught running anything pirated if you're a cheap ass and dont wanna buy windows.
