NEWARK, N.J. - The injuries continue to pile up for the New Jersey Devils.

Already missing key players Brian Rolston (ankle) and Bobby Holik (pinkie), the Devils suffered potentially the most devastating loss of all when Marty Brodeur injured his left elbow. The Brodeur situation overshadowed the Devils' 6-1 victory over the Atlanta Thrashers on Saturday night.

Brodeur, one of the most durable players in the NHL, left the game after bruising his elbow in the second period.

No one knew the severity of the injury, or offered a time frame for recovery.

"You're asking me something I'm not sure of," said Devils coach Brent Sutter. "I just don't know what to tell you. We'll see where Marty's at tomorrow and we'll see how it goes."

Sutter said he had not spoken to Brodeur, who dressed and went home without speaking to the media.

Brodeur, seven wins shy of tying Patrick Roy's NHL record of 551 career victories, had played every minute of New Jersey's 10 games this season before he was hurt 6:38 into the second period. He did the splits to make a sprawling stop, got up slowly clutching his left arm, and skated off the ice with the Devils leading 3-0.

"He stretched out to make a glove save," Sutter said. "They he stretched out again. I don't know exactly what happened. He got hit earlier with a shot there, too."

Zach Parise scored two goals to help the Devils end a three-game losing streak and extend his goal-scoring string to a career-high six straight.

Atlanta suffered its sixth straight loss, a game in which the Thrashers were barely competitive. Slava Kozlov scored for Atlanta at 6:30 of the third period off Brodeur's replacement - Kevin Weekes -to prevent its third shutout in 11 games.

"You don't want that to happen," Weekes said. "My parents taught us when we were younger that you don't want to look for an opportunity at the expense of somebody else's health. It's happened to me. It's happened to all of us. We've got a lot of guys hurt, and hopefully Marty's isn't too serious."

Brodeur led the NHL in games played by a goalie the last two seasons with 78 and 77 appearances. The last time he was forced out of action was in 2005, when he was sidelined for six games due to a knee injury from Oct. 28 to Nov. 8.

In addition to closing in on Roy's records for wins and games played by a goalie, Brodeur also is five shutouts away from tying Terry Sawchuk's NHL career mark of 103.

"You don't want to see anybody go down," said Devils captain Jamie Langenbrunner. "Obviously, he's pretty important for us. We all hope it's not anything too serious."

Bergfors scored the goal as the Devils led 1-0 after a dominant first period in which they outshot the Thrashers 12-4.

Bergfors got his first NHL point, shooting from the right circle while Dainius Zubrus provided an effective screen in front of Johan Hedberg at 14:10.

Hedberg made his second start of the season with Kari Lehtonen, "under the weather" according to Thrashers officials, a scratch.

New Jersey blew the game open with five goals in the second period for a 6-0 lead.

"There is no reason for us having these letdowns," Hedberg said. "For whatever reason, we can't seem to get it together."

Besides the pair from Parise, New Jersey got tallies from Patrik Elias, Brian Gionta and Jay Pandolfo to bury the Thrashers.

"We're a fragile team right now," said Thrashers coach John Anderson. "It's really tough right now."

Notes: Sheldon Brookbank replaced Andy Greene on the New Jersey blueline. Greene suffered a broken hand Thursday night in the Devils 6-5 shootout loss to the Maple Leafs and will be out 4-to-6 weeks. .. Bergfors played in his second game. He played on opening night last season and hurt his shoulder. .. The Thrashers recalled G Ondrej Pavelec from Chicago (AHL) to backup Hedberg. He took over to start the third period. .. Parise became the fifth Devil to score goals in six straight games. Holik, on a seven-game stretch, did it most recently in 1998. Other Devils to reach that mark were Kirk Muller, Pat Verbeek and Valeri Zelepukin. Paul Gardner holds the franchise record with goals in 11 straight in 1979, when the team was located in Colorado and Don Cherry was the head coach.

Yea this is whats up.

I wanted to Draft A single team too see how I would do with it in the Pool. So I picked Dallas because they are a consistently good regular season team, And this year they are better then last year. I also knew it would be easy to draft there team, and it was. The plan kind of fell to shit about the time Dallas decided to be the worst team in the western conference.

Broudeur Out 3-4 MONTHS.

Martin Brodeur's assault on the record book will be put on hold as the Devils' goalkeeper will undergo surgery to repair torn bicep tendons and will be out of the lineup for up to four months. Brodeur suffered the injury during the second period of Saturday's Devils victory over the Atlanta Thrashers with what was described as a "bruised elbow."

wow. ESPN should never be allowed to talk about hockey again. they should just defer to TSN for all thinks NHL. in covering the wings/pens game, they completely neglect to mention that the two goals that put the pens back in that game come on a 5 on 3 then 5 on 4 situation. they also failed to mention that the last goal was scored with an extra attacker from an empty net as well. showed all of them in the highlight, just hoped that everyone would be too stupid to notice that the pens need at least one extra man on the ice for their last three goals in regulation.

they also only showed 1 of the wings goals. all three of staals, showed crosbys from 4 different angles, but could only be bothered to show one of the wings goals. im surprised they even managed to mention that these two teams played in the cup finals as a lead in for the highlight (tho they did predictably neglect to mention the outcome). god i hate the NHL marketing machine.

i didnt get to watch it, i was at work all night. id have figured an 11 goal rematch of one of the highest rated games in recent NHL history would at least have warranted all 11 goals in the highlight tho. evidently, this is why im not a programming director of a sports network. god forbid you should actually show programming that actually appeals the viewership instead of appeasing the hype machine.

Lotta whining in this thread.

Though I do agree with Odin about the ESPN hype machine. I have not even watched a full episode of sports center since the day after the Steelers won the super bowl, and then several years before that. The hype and fluff far outweigh the actual coverage.

And get off Sid's ass. He is one of the main reasons for the revitalization of the NHL. Sorry if you guys don't have as many marketable personalities on your teams that conduct themselves with professionalism, class and skill the way Crosby does. That "not good enough for detriot's second line" shtick is a pathetic load of balderdash and you know it Odin. The guy is not the youngest league MVP/Team Captain/100 pt scorer in the history of the game because he sucks. Dude played all playoffs last year with a bum ankle and has never made an excuse. You and newt would both love to have him on your team and if you say any different than you have lost all hockey credibility.

Brian Burke is out as general manager of the Anaheim Ducks and senior vice president of hockey operations Bob Murray is in.
Sources tell TSN Burke will remain in a senior advisory capacity with the Ducks for now but that the final word on any hockey operations decisions in Anaheim will be made by Murray. Sources say Burke will, in this advisory capacity, have the ability to freely negotiate future employment opportunities as a GM in the NHL.

with the way hes playing right now, hes not good enough to break the second line in detroit. its not even an issue of marketability with sid for the most part. henrik zetterberg is every bit as personable and marketable, but youd never know it because no one outside the local detroit media sticks a microphone in his face. there are a lot of guys in the NHL that i hate that are every bit as marketable as well. im shocked as hell that the NHL doesnt whore the shit out of jerome iginla. he plays strong canadian style hockey, hes a ton of fun to watch, and he doesnt cry about calls when things dont go his way. all that and hes a negro. i hate the guy with a passion, but i think its foolish that the NHL doesnt whore him out every chance they get.

you are probably right, i more than likely wouldnt turn him down if he wanted to play on my team. unless someone already on my team had to go away. im stuck watching a painful choice be made at the end of the season as is with hossa, zetterberg, and franzen contracts being up and more than likely only 2 of 3 being signable under the cap.

Anyway, now after 6 wins in a row the exact same 17 games played, the Pens are 3 wins and 6 pts up on your Devils. The Rangers are 4 pts ahead and have 3 games in hand and will be caught soon enough. Yeah, he's the 4th leading scorer in the league yet he wouldn't crack a team's top two lines who we already beat this year. Of those 6 players that he couldn't supposedly crack he has more points than all of them except for Hossa who he is one behind.

You won't have to worry about Hossa - he will realize that he made a mistake leaving the Pens to begin with and will sign long term with us at the end of this year - chasing the team with the cup for the 2nd year in a row ;)

if they couldnt beat the red wings with marian hossa, what makes you think they can without? to say nothing of the fact that hossas now a red wing, what makes you think they can win a 7 game series against the wings? they couldnt do it last year, they wont do it this year. it took jordan staal picking that team up and carrying them to even beat a red wings team that is playing worse defense than they have in a decade. substituting satan for hossa doesnt make them a better team, it just changes the faces. if the team was inadequate to the task last time, why are you getting your hopes up again?

he might score more points, but he cant play all around hockey. my top two lines can all kill penalties, and do so very well. can crosby?

i think we both know he cant.

hes a great offensive presence, but ill take slightly less flashy stats for good multi-directional play any day of the week. hes a better goal scorer than datsyuk and zetterberg, but hes not a better hockey player.

Um, we already beat the Wings in Detroit this year - without our 2 best defenseman and after spotting you guys a 3 goal lead. The fact that our 3rd line center tooled you guys, I would say that is a bonus, not a detriment to our chances. Stop making excuses. As far as how they will be up to the task this year it is obvious - the Pens are the youngest, most skilled team in the league with a ton of DEVELOPING talent. Our core guys are not getting older and slowing down, they are still years from reaching their peaks! Teams like us and Washington don't need to add anybody to get better by virtue of the players themselves improving.

Wait for see. It's happening right before your eyes. You better hope Osgood forgets he is an average goalie for a month or so again this year or your team will do their usual early round exit from the playoffs like they usually do. Last year was your year - good for you guys, but that was last year.

about that old thing you mention. you do know its only 5 guys that heavily skew the average age of the wings, dont you? and that cheli makes it terribly skewed, as he is about 10000 years old. these are important things to keep in mind when you tout your team as inherently better because of youth. to say nothing of the fact that a guy like kyle quincey was waived due to the fact that he couldnt crack the roster here only to go to LA and average almost 30 minutes a game there. the few old guys on this team know they need to perform, so they do. there is a LOT of young and exceptional talent on this team just waiting for them to fuck up so they can steal their jobs.

i fail to see how anyone was making excuses for anything. the red wings are playing poor defensive hockey this season. look at the stats. its fact, not some invention to explain a bad loss. sadly, your "big" stars couldnt show up for a huge rematch and your 3rd line center had to pick that team up and carry them. i wouldnt be too thrilled that it was a necessity for them to win. good to know he can, really fucking bad that he had to. its great that you can take contentment and satisfaction from a single game that took an 11th goal to win, but shit like that isnt going to cut it in the playoffs.

Too bad we won't get to see them face off.

Devils 6 of Top 10 players injury pwnt.

The Rangers have decided that since I decided to get up and watch this game, they are going to forget to play hockey.

Then Drury scored.

Lol were do you get your stats from. They are the 3rd highest scoring team behind San Jose and Detroit. and the pens are 9th highest scoring team. The bruins have the best G/F to G/A ratio by far.

They took over 1st in the east conference with that win.

If you told me that Boston would be fist in the east at the 1/4 point of the season I would have loled in ur face, and i probably did.
They showed us. I thought they would be 8th-6th ish.

Pittsburgh, PA (Sports Network) - Vancouver Canucks goaltender Roberto Luongo left Saturday's game against the Pittsburgh Penguins with an apparent left leg injury.

With 15:06 left in the first period, Luongo made a pad save but immediately fell down to the ice and could not get up. Play was stopped and a couple teammates had to help him off the ice after a lengthy trainers visit.

Curtis Sanford came in to replace Luongo in net.

Luongo has posted an 11-5-2 mark this season with a .928 save percentage. He had a career-long shutout streak earlier in the season, going 2:42:36 without allowing a goal. He has an NHL-best five shutouts on the season and has a 2.18 goals-against average.
