well i am not an expert in either of those 3 languages, but i can tell you that java is slow as balls but it's soo portable.

50/50 time spent between debian and ubuntu linux and windows XP.

i know how but i've never done it. dictionary/brute force attacks on an FTP or SSH server can get the job done, as can research into specific server softwares and their versions being run to find potential vulnerabilities. brute force will generally get you caught though. it takes for ever. so the short answer is yes. :yes::yes::yes:

I'm making it as a part of my Object Oriented Design and Modeling Class.

Here are Requirement Analysis and Problem Definition I'll be submitting on Monday.


The purpose of file sharing over university intranet is of the prime importance for the university since manual methods have been proven both inefficient and ineffective in case of file sharing among large groups. The university has requisite infrastructure in terms of an intranet which can be used to implement a system which is both scalable for all the university personnel. Also, a dedicated server can be provided but we need to limit the upgradation/expansion/running charges to the least minimum possible since they incur high cost and time expenditures. This system has to be designed at application layer using TCP/IP specifically for deployment over small to medium sized networks for sharing of small files though nothing should stop it from being deployed over internet and sharing large files.

The prime need is to increase interactions among students and teachers. The ideas/research material/assignments/important notifications can be propagated easily as files over a network. The system should be scalable so that its size can be increased over time. The increase in size would be inevitable as the nodes that the system will have to handle increases spurred by the increase of handheld computing devices on the campus. Also, with time, we’d like to collaborate with the regional campuses and other universities in areas of common interest.

The files would be small in size but even initial speculation suggests that it’s not advisable to put much load for request on any one central server and like to ensure availability of the files even if server goes down. On the other hand, the total decentralization will lead to unnecessary technical overheads and can cause security concerns which we can do without.

Portability and cross platform support are necessary for the system to be successfully used by peers in a diverse environment that it has to work in. The system is desired to be distributed in its functionality as much as possible because of the inherent benefits in terms of load balancing and fault tolerance that comes with it.

The prevalent file sharing solutions do not solve the problems posed by the specific constraints of our situation. The existing methods of file sharing include:

1. The Manual File Sharing Methods: These include transfer of data by the usage of CDs, DVDs, USB Storage, and Floppy Disks etc. These methods are generally known as Sneaker Nets. They proved woefully inconvenient and cumbersome when a large amount of data is to be transferred or the locations are geographically isolated.

2. Client – Server Architecture: This model of file sharing is based on the utilization of computer networks – A facility that we have at our disposal and which can be hacked to suit our needs. These Peer-oriented Client-Server Systems like Rapidshare or Megaupload use web interface to help users upload files to a central server from where it can be downloaded by the users.

This dependence on a central server isn’t necessary and should be avoided. This model isn’t scalable (and it would incur huge hardware upgrades) and is highly centralized translating into the fact that if the server goes down, the whole network becomes unusable. Also, the dependence on one single central location makes the whole model less prone to recovery in case of server crashes.

The usage of web interface in place of a separate interface, nevertheless, is commendable since it proves friendly and easy to use by making the server responsible for the functionality that user has no business handling. The user just needs a browser to log on to the server and make use of the services and is saved from unnecessary overhead complexity to which he doesn’t needs to be subjected to.

3. Peer-to-peer file sharing Architecture: These systems are to be divided in 2 major subsystems – The centralized and decentralized P2P systems.

The centralized P2P systems, case study being Napster, are a network of peers which log on to a central server to get online on the network. The server itself maintains the file indexes storing all the details of files available for sharing over the network. This system, even though it distributes the load of actual file download from a central site, still handles all the searching queries from various users since it maintains the file index. This model will prove unmanageable when the whole network grows up to include more users.

The decentralized P2P systems, for example the Gnutella network is fully decentralized – complete with its own network logging-in, searching and downloading mechanisms. The model itself is much better and achieves its goal of load distribution and fault tolerance effectively.

This model, if and when scaled up above a certain critical size, is prone to lead the network towards separate, disconnected islands of sub networks meaning that search wouldn’t be as comprehensive as possible. Now, this problem isn’t found in the more centralized systems. So, in every case, there is a trade off our various needs which in turn depends on the size, design, needs of the network.

Apart from that, there are a bunch of very good file-download protocols like BitTorrent which provide users the advanced features to download data from multiple sites and consequently upload while you’re downloading. But the crux of the problem with them in spite of their really brilliantly devised features, is that they are file download protocols; not file sharing protocols. For file sharing, we need both a file searching and a file download protocol.

Please note that it’s not advisable to use web interface in this specific case since it’d require us to provide a server to all nodes from a central location which will be against good programming practices.

FOR DEVELOPMENT OF P2P FILE SHARING SYSTEMS

After identifying the requirement of a peer to peer based file sharing system, the next step is defining the problem so as to develop a mechanism to go about solving it.

We need to allow peers to pass messages and file chunks among each other. The peer will have to log on to the network by letting the already online peers know of its existence by establishing connections by sending handshake requests.

This request will be sent to the peers with whom the user is interested in sharing files with. Now we’ll need an authentication mechanism, a sort of a gatekeeper program that the client logging in is a valid peer and should be allowed to log on to the network. This mechanism should be automated since the user should not be subjected to handling functionality, which by definition, should be abstracted away to the background.

Because of the nature of the software, the username password type authentication would fail since there would be no centralized repository holding the usernames and passwords. Also, it is extremely difficult and pointless to handle passwords in a distributed environment. Such a move is bound to make the system to countless bugs leading to identity thefts and security flaws.

File Searching Queries would be forwarded to central repository, controlled by university, which will hold the indexes of files available for download. This repository will allow the users to download the file’s metadata which will then be used to download files by adding it to the client. The functionality to generate the metadata-file would be included in the peer-client. The metadata-file would then be uploaded onto the central university server.

To download a file, we’ll connect to the group of peers which are interested in sharing the file. We’ll connect to a group of peers and they will initiate download. The connection request can be sent to any of the group member since each peer would keep track of its peers with whom the file is being shared. We’ll allow the file in a predefined location to be read and sent over a network and simultaneously download the file by accepting data packets sent by other clients. The identification of the disconnected clients needs to be automatic and the clients need to be prepared for such abrupt disconnections.

The connection handling would be a separate multithreaded operation. The download and upload have to be multithreaded operations since we’ll be accepting and sending data to more than one client. The relationships between various multithreaded operations need to be well defined. The need for separate threads for connection/upload/download operations arose since we need to make sure that the relations are well defined and there are no side effects of modification in any modules.

Simultaneous upload/download would introduce load balancing and fault tolerance to the failure of peers. This wouldn’t be wholly foolproof though. We’ll need to introduce facilities to resume broken downloads by creating some sort of save point when the peer disconnects the network. Also we need to force peers to seed the files till they’ve uploaded it to a certain ratio to check leaching. We need to be able to display important notifications in the main client window which will be displayed by the central server to which connection would be automatically made at the time of initializing of the client window. There will also be need to ensure data integrity. We also need to ensure that the software is portable and can ensure sharing between many platforms.

Here's a random fact: For a supplementary text for an English exam I chose Goodfellas and quoted relevent stuff but included a lot of swearing. I got my exam back (with fabulous marks of course :sifone:) with a note written on it that I should write "f**k" instead of "fuck". Here's a random fact: For a supplementary text for an English exam I chose Goodfellas and quoted relevent stuff but included a lot of swearing. I got my exam back (with fabulous marks of course :sifone:) with a note written on it that I should write "f**k" instead of "fuck". I argued that it's too time consuming to draw asterisks or stars and I'm going to keep writing fuck shit etc without censoring it.
