Well its not exactly the same shit... There are three schools of thought in the jiu jitsu world, MMA, self defense, and sport jiu jitsu. Carlsons camp obviously specializes in the MMA jiu jitsu (busta, sperrry ( i think), etc), helio always emphasized the self defense aspects of jiu jitsu, so his sons (rickson, royce etc) play a much more defensive game. The Machados, another family who are related to the gracies, do some really sick sport jiu jitsu.

Yeah I agree, as such Jiu Jitsu is just the study of all grappling, however people train for different reasons! Obviously people who train in the self defense aspect aren't going to have great takedowns, and people who have a sport Jiu Jitsu background will be experts at getting their knee on your stomach. People who train Jiu Jitsu for MMA will train without a gi etc, JJ is JJ yes, but there are tons of ways to train it

Couldnt have said it better myself, especially the training in the GI part. You should always train in exactly the same conditions as you fight in (mouthguard, no gi...), so for the gracies to live and die in their GI's, it just goes to show their focus is not exactly domination in MMA, but in a skill that happens to be transferrable to mma
