Sorry for long post, but I had some fun tonight. http://ninjashoes.net/forum/images/jaja/icon7.gif

Been training boxing five nights a week for 1.5 months. 6:30 to 8:00pm I go through the "BoxFit" class that focuses on cardio and basic boxing technique for beginners and people who are just there to get in shape. After that I stay for another hour/90 minutes or so of hitting the bag or working the mitts with the coaches then do some more strength and conditioning stuff.

Yesterday my coach told me to get a mouthguard, and I brought it today. He wasn't there at the beginning, so I went through the boxfit class with the other coaches as usual and he arrived at the end. Half way through my work on the heavy bag (when I'm already nice and tired http://ninjashoes.net/forum/images/jaja/icon11.gif)he comes over and tells me to grab some head gear and sparring gloves.

We went for three two minute rounds. I finished all three but I was totally exhausted by the midway point of the third when he started turning up the pressure after going relatively lightly the first two rounds. I think it was 30 seconds between rounds, but it might have been a minute. I also didn't take my mouthguard out or drink anything between rounds.

I've only been in one fist fight before a long time ago and it only lasted a couple seconds, so this was the first time I had really gotten punched in the face.

Of course I took a nice beating. It will come as I get more experience in the ring, but I barely threw any combinations that we work on, and I didn't do a very good job blocking (but I only started learning blocks like a week ago, lol).

In the third round he was calling out the three punch combination he was going to throw a second before he threw it and then still landing atleast two of the punches :owned:.

He landed a few big punches on me. Well, they felt pretty big, but I know he can punch a hell of a lot harder than that - maybe solid punches is a better description. Bullied me around a little bit in real close - which we had never worked on. Kinda silly, instead of circling off and throwing punches, I just sat there for a second a punched in to the body which he easily blocked with his elbow.

Enough of the bad, now for the stuff I did good - or as much as I can remember since I was lying on the floor trying to catch my breath when he was telling me what I did good. Going to talk to him tomorrow before class to find out for sure.

-I had good "forward aggression".

-Threw my jab a lot.

-Even though I gassed half way through the third round, he said my cardio was still good - I did just do almost two hours of mid intensity cardio work just before that.

-He came in real close and threw a few punches and then when I stepped away he nailed me with a right hook. The next time he came in close, I made sure to have my hand up high guarding the side of my head (instead of in the standard position guarding my chin) when getting out , so I was learning from my previous mistakes.

I've got swelling, bruising, and abrasions under my left eye (will probably look nasty tomorrow), an abrasion on my forehead/eyebrow from him landing his jab quite a few times, as well as a couple small cuts/abrasions on my lower lip. I'll try to post some pictures tomorrow just for fun.

The funny thing is, my boxing coach is almost 60 years old. I don't mind getting my butt kicked by a guy who's been boxing for like 45-50 years when I've been boxing for 40-50 days, but it's kinda depressing when he's less tired then you after. He's also got the best body out of anyone in the gym (no homo). To quote Joe Rogan, "That man is my hero!" http://ninjashoes.net/forum/images/jaja/icon7.gif

Even though I got handled tonight, I still loved it, and can't wait to see how I do next time which will probably be in a week or two after we work on more stuff. Maybe I'll start a training log type thread like that other guy is doing, mostly for my reference but for anyone else who is interested or just wants to laugh at me. :-)

Anyone feel like sharing stories about their first time sparring?

Where you training at? I was thinking of going to a boxing school, my BJJ school offers Kickboxing but it's only twice a week. I hear good things about Durham Boxing Academy.
