View Full Version : computer Q&A with ferg
ferg [ADR] 06-18-2008, 06:47 AM i like this part of the forum because it let's me show off how nerdy i am, so ask me questions and lavish me with attention so i don't go cut myself. they don't even have to be real questions as long it just makes me feel useful.
in fact, you could probably just post some gay porn and i'd be fine with that.
ninjashoes 06-18-2008, 05:45 PM my computer keeps showing me gay pron
How would I self host a website.
ferg [ADR] 06-19-2008, 02:42 AM my computer keeps showing me gay pron
stop going to gay porn sites. sherdog.net is notorious for that.
ferg [ADR] 06-19-2008, 02:47 AM How would I self host a website.
you need:
1. HTTP server software (check out apache - www.apache.org )
2. if you are going to have PHP support and all that fancy stuff, you will need to install PHP5 - http://www.php.net/get/php-5.2.6-win32-installer.msi/from/a/mirror
link right to installer download ^^^^^^
3. most decent PHP scripts require SQL (structured query language) database support. those can be a bitch to set up the first time, but here is link: http://dev.mysql.com/downloads/
you want the community server ^^^^^^^^^
4. you need to open port 80 in your router and/or firewall
5. you need to know your IP address, because that is what you give people to get to your site when the server is running.
6. giving people an IP is lame, so if you get a domain name get in touch with the company you bought it from and have them set it so that the domain is bonded with your IP, so you can just people the domain name instead.
lemme know if you have issues.
How Rude 06-19-2008, 05:04 AM ^repsfor teh info
ninjashoes 06-19-2008, 06:16 AM you need a static ip also
ferg [ADR] 06-19-2008, 06:51 AM static IP is nice to have. mine is technically dynamic, but it changes once a year if that. there are programs out there designed to immediately update your domain to match your IP when it changes.
actually, my linksys WRT54G router has a built-in capability to do that with dyndns.org and some other one i forget.
sprawl 06-19-2008, 08:03 PM ok this is driving me nuts for a long time now:
every year, around summer and only around summer my computer start crashing giving me a blue screen with a message DRIVER_IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL and then some stuff about uninstalling recent programs (none were installed) and shit like that.
it dumps physical memory to disc and then restarts.
it happens in a growing frequency untill you can't use it anymore.usually happenes when i play movies.
the only way to solve it is by formatting everything and then it is ok untill next summer or so.
i looked it up in the internet and it says that the computer is prolly overheated but when i look at the computer temp in the restart it is ok,plus if that was the problem formatting the disc wouldnt have helped me.
what the hell is the problem???
is there a program i can DL to fix this (i guess it is something related to the OS).
my windows is not genuine but i installed from different friends and none of them have this problem.

I dont know whats causing that particular error but if it is due to overheating do you have enough fans in your case?
you should install speedfan or something to check your temps

thanks,i'll try this.
thing is that it seems peculiar to me that formatting solves a heat problem.
plus, that still doesn't explain the changing frequency (if that was the problem i wouldve expected crashes to be at the same frequency),and since i cant expect the crash it will be hard to monitor exact temprature all the time.
i'll try this anyway,thanks again.
IMAMEX 06-19-2008, 10:19 PM Okay I just bought a computer without an OS so I found my XP disc and installed it and it seems to be running pretty good. Now I want to format my old comp and reinstall windows. Basically clean out everything in there and start over from scratch. So the question is How do I re-install windows on my old computer that freezes up on me from time to time?

how old is the computer? it sounds to me like either overheat like ninja says, or hard disk starting to fail. could be a driver problem, too. hard drive usually start to bite the dust at about 3 to 4 years if you're lucky.
memory could also be an issue. that particular error can be a shitload of different things. windows error messages usually don't give you much to go on.
ferg [ADR] 06-21-2008, 01:24 AM i uploaded an ISO file of a diagnostic CD i use to test computers with... there's a lot of stuff on it, but you'll want to burn the image to CD, and boot from it. select option 1: system diagnostics
then choose the first option in the next menu, it's a program called PC-Check that is fuckin awesome. it'll test all your hardware to see if there is something at fault. if not, it's a software issue...
if you haven't burned an image to CD before, tell me and i'll help you.
here is the ISO: http://rubbermallet.org/diag_cd.iso

basically just did what you did with the new one, boot from the XP CD and in the partitioning screen, delete every partition, then create one new one and install XP on it and boom! fresh computer!

i'll try this once i'll get back home.
the computer is like 5-6 y\o but it started after two years.
i already changed the memory cards, expanded memory, reinstalled windows from several sources and cleaned the interior...still nothing.
thanks for the file,i really hope it will help.
hotnewton 06-21-2008, 01:47 PM you say that the harddrive lasts 3 to 4 years if you are lucky.
I've been using the same computer since 2002-ish. And it still runs pretty good.
Is it time for an upgrade?
I have a new computer but I don't use it.
Also. I'm looking into buying a laptop. I don't game or anything, could you recommend something. I want to be able to edit movies though as I just bought a video camera and have started filming shit.
hotnewton 06-21-2008, 01:49 PM also. i just bought an iPod shuffle but hate iTunes. I found a site that lets you bypass iTunes junk.
Would you like me to share it when I get home? It's pretty cool shit. It apparantly works for all types of iPods (Nano, regular, whatever else exists)

Rock box?
hotnewton 06-21-2008, 03:50 PM I don't remember.
It's some weird thing.
You turn your iPod into a hard drive... then you copy music right to it and run this program written in Python (?) and it turns it into a regular MP3 player.
Fuck iTunes.
hotnewton 06-22-2008, 02:10 AM No. I tried that.
I tried a lot of things. But the shuffle is so basic it didn't get picked up.
Anyways. I was wrong. It only works with the Shuffle.
But here is the link:

Come on Ferg answer my question.

Okay it seems to have worked. I was doing the updates and shit. Should I just bump it up to service pack 3?
Also, I bought a system from tiger direct without an OS and my friend told me to install windows XP on a 20 gig partition and install other programs on the partition that has the rest of the hard drive. Does that make sense? Well I already did it so I guess it's a moot point now.
ferg [ADR] 06-27-2008, 06:54 AM Ferg how do you make gifs like this awesome one?

I figure you took that straight off the youtube video as well so how do you rip vids off youtube as well?
yup, www.downloadyoutubevideos.com you can do it manually by examining a youtube page's source code, but this is way quicker. it saves as an FLV (flash video) file, which not a lot of players support but it works good with vlc ( www.videolan.org ) and you can use that to convert it to mpeg or something else. from mpeg i can load it in virtualdub ( www.virtualdub.org ) select the part i want, delete the rest and then theres an option in the vdub file menu to export to image file sequences. then i take those and put them into easy gif animator ( http://www.blumentals.net/egifan/ )

tbh, i have no idea. i haven't tried SP3 yet. i've been pretty cautious about it because my computer works great right now. there's nothing i need it for, and usually when microsoft puts out an upgrade for anything it's actually a downgrade. see vista. i'd just keep SP2 until you run into some software that requires SP3, which afaik there isn't any yet.
i actually am still using SP1. lol. it uses less memory because theres less useless bloatage. there is software that needs SP2, but nothing that i need to run.
how would i set it up that if someone just typed in say "hjkghg" in the address bar it would send them to my site.
Resin 07-08-2008, 10:02 AM I recently had trouble with my dsl router ...... i called my provider and they sent this man i dont know over and he told me since im so far away from the main office or whatever im not going to have the best signal then he goes on to say that my router is an older model..... my question is if i buy a new model will it make my shit pwn again?
i used to get 50 to 150 kb on my wi fi on my laptop now it goes maybe 30 to 44kb wtf....

i hate seeing a non-jew get jewed. i don't know if it's your router for sure, but if the desktop is wired and works at the fast speed, it's obviously wi-fi related. connect your laptop with a wire and see how it runs.
try resetting your router and seeing if that helps. if not, download the latest firmware for it from the mfg's website and update. if it still sucks then yeah i'd upgrade the router. some of them they can fuck up when they get old. i have no idea why, probably cheap parts inside.

i had remembered i did a system update on the laptop and after that i was having trouble with it.... well turns out it was zone alarm... it locks everything down well the update makes that happen.

henry 07-29-2008, 02:32 PM I am having problems with my burner, it is a Memorex DVD16+/-DL4RWID2. Before I could pretty much use any brand of media and get a decent burn, but lately all I have been getting is write errors. I checked for a firmware update but the latest for that model is dated as July 5, 2005. Any help available, or is it time for a new drive?

it's gettin' a bit old. try this... go to www.slax.org and download the CD ISO file for SLAX. boot to it, with the SLAX disc in a different drive than your memorex DVD burner. make sure you select the "KDE" option on the first boot menu when the disc first tries to load.
when it boots up all the way, run the K3B tool. (you'll see it, it's on the normal menu bar on the bottom of the screen.
http://rubbermallet.org/screen.png
you can see there, it's the big red "K III B" icon next to the 1, 2, 3, 4.
try to burn a small data DVD with K3B with some random file. see if that works. if it does, you know windows is gay. go back to windoze, uninstall it from device manager, and re-scan for new hardware. try again from windows.

I burn avi's onto cds all the time. If its too large of a file i split it into 2. Nothing special i just copy it onto the cd and tell windows to burn it. My dvd player plays avi files like most dvd players do now a days, and it works just fine.

first place to check is your documents folder! if you switch the folder view mode to detailed, you can see all the file sizes.

if the movie is under 700 MB or so, it'll fit on a CD. just make a normal data CD project in nero or whatever burner you use and drop the avi file into it.
you can also make video cd's, which play in most DVD players but the quality is roughly the same as VHS... and you can only fit like 80 mins on a disc.

well what error do you get from it? are you using the cisco as your only router connected right to your cable/DSL modem? i'm assuming nobody else has problems doing this remotely, right?
the first thing i would do is reset the cisco's configuration to default and start from scratch. it IS configured to be the spoke and not the hub, right?
ferg [ADR] 11-11-2008, 08:31 AM just to be clear, i am familiar with what DMVPN is and understand what it does/how it works but i've never had to actually set one up myself and in fact haven't touched a real cisco router in 5 years. i am probably not going to be of much help in configuring it.

that's either a hardware issue or a nasty virus. i doubt it's the BIOS unless there's some sort of problem with it's ACPI functionality. go into the screensaver selection window, and disable screen savers completely. then go into power management from there, and tell it to never turn off the monitor, hard drives, or go to sleep. also make sure it's not set to hibernate or go into standby when you close the screen lid. (or just leave the screen open)
after that, just let it run for a while and if the freezes stop happening i would go to the manufacturer's website and download the latest BIOS for it then flash it. lemme know if you need some more help.
it's more likely that it's overheating if you ask me though. if it keeps running after doing what i said above, then it's not overheating.

i talked to a tech support faggot and he had me update a couple drivers and disable a few in network devices. that didnt work. im gonna try bios i guess. i just did the screen saver thing but i think its bigger than that. this is fucking bullshit, this computer is only 3 months old.
ferg [ADR] 11-13-2008, 01:54 AM only 3 months? well it probably isn't clogged up with dust then. i doubt it's overheating. i bet windows is broken and might need a reload, or you got a laptop with faulty hardware.
Jack Mehoff {ADR} 11-13-2008, 05:22 AM were just going to back up as much as possible on dvds and then restore the piece of shit
