Because in this particular case the savior was to become the King of the Jews. And to be King, he needs to be descended from the last King (David). I may have some details incorrect so check with xcept68 for confirmation.

close. but this is why. The lineage has to be directly connected through the human side of Jesus and the Divine side of Christ so that Christ taking on our sin debt, was directly traced back to Adam. For one man sin was brought into the world and by one man it was forgiven. This makes more sense don't ya think?
