I've done it. No big deal if you train smart and are used to not going to the doctor for minor bruises, sprains, cuts...

You should get medical insurance Ninj. Not just for fighting but for…well life I guess. What if something shitty were to happen to you and you needed to stay in a hospital for a couple weeks? You would be paying out your ass for a long, long time:yes:

I have insurance but also a fight promoter will pay for injuries incurred usually. Also, I live in canada so that works

I think you should definately have an insurance. Here in Finland we have an "automatic" health insurance, you have to pay up to a small amount but after that the goverment pays the rest.

Ninjashoes, I dont have any Insurance and I ruptured my Achilles Heel, now I have to pay all my Hospital bills on my own. I just got my first bill the other day and let me tell you that it hurt when it came out my pocket. fucking OUCH!!

When I got dropped from my fams insurance...I held off training till I got my own.. Nothing has happened so far, but I would not reccomend doing any heavy weights or sparring till you do get some. Like someone said before, if you get injured or break a bone or something you will be paying 10x the amount that your isurance costs.

Health insurance is no joke... no matter where you live.. what are you really saving? maybe 40 a month... now think how much more you have to lose if you need surgery 20, 30k? just pay the 40 a month and be smart. The risks FAR outweigh the benefits (40 extra bucks in your pocket)

The insurance is worth it. You never know if you'll get injured not only in training, but on the job also.

If you train like an amatour you don't need it, if you fight is better if you have one, any federation has an insurance for his fighter so check it.

I went back to University this year for the first time in the USA, I was forced to sign up to a gargantuan medical insurance plan. I am paying around $1500 per annum. It hurts. I will use up all my remaining allowance on the day my policy expires.
Better be safe than sorry is one way to justify the extra expenditure. It really depends how risk averse you are.

I would suggest that you get medical insurance. Even if you train "smart" all of the time, you never know when you'll have an accident with a training partner. At my gym, a friend of mine was just doing some light wrestling with another buddy and he twisted the wrong way and tore his ACL. I really hate paying for insurance, but better safe then sorry.

in australia medical insurance wont cover your income losses. i just recovered from a broken hand and wrist which put me out of work for 3 months and i got money from the government (equal to $70US a week)...
if you tell them it was an accident (well it is...sparring = accident waiting to happen) they will cover most of your medical bills. i had to pay like $200 to go to a public hospital and get xrays, plaster, operation but in the US that would have meant i would have had to mortgage my house!!
just be careful, always warm up and warm down and only fight hard in competition

No big deal if you don't have any. You're just as much at risk of slipping and breaking your neck getting out of bed in the morning as you are getting hurt at the gym. train hard!

there's no way i'd spar or roll w/out med. insurance. seen 3 people blow out their knees the last 2 years - 1 of them had ins. - the other 2 have a 15-18k doctors bill.
like some people have said, something could happen tomorrow, & if you don't have it you'll wish you did.

move to canada, the taxes are a bitch, but I have 2 grand worth of physio and massage free in my work medical plan.
I also have an upcoming surgery and will pay nothing for it.
I think about this from time to time, and if I didn't have coverage I would not spar much at all.
Also I have fluid in my ear right now that needs to be drained, and it is free as well.

I train without medical.
I never really get hurt, and if I do it's minor, and I'll heal in a month.

BTW, It's not that bad of an idea, but it's not good.
Health insurance is so fucking expensive though. It's worth it though.

i've been doing bjj for a few months
and through just rolling in practice i've sprained my shoulder and hurt both my knees
not badly, but its enough to show me that the risk of injury is definitely there
get insurance dude

I have been lifting weights for about 2 years and I do thaiboxing for about 3 months. I don't pay anything(my dad is the owner of the gym) so I probably don't have any insurance. I have not been hurt till now except some headache after sparring. You don't need it when you don't go to far in training or when you warm-up and stretch and so on...

I would not walk down the street. A brick can fall. Just be careful, that's all you can do.
