anyone know how I can rip some video from news sites like cbs news
I tried keepvid but it didnt work, the links end in (s)html not a file type like .avi

jomomma, if that doesn't work give me the link you want the vid from. i'll look at the source and give you a direct link to the file.
FRITZ has good advice, too. only problem with those desktop recorders is that if a video on a page is being rendered through your video card's overlay buffer it won't be recorded. you'll just record a black box where the vid should be. (most video player do allow you to disable overlay though, so if you do that it should work fine)
overlays give certain software direct memory access to the video card and it's not passed through the operating system's screen write functions. this is generally used by video players and games. by doing that, there is like zero CPU used for actually putting the video/image information on the screen. it can dedicate all the CPU to the actual decoding of the video/game rather than using half of it to transfer that decoding to vidoe memory. it's much smoother that way.
in the case of some of the more advanced video cards (pretty much all of them these days) they have hardware that even helps with the video decoding(depending on the particular codec), making even LESS work for the CPU and software.
