ok bros im looking to get a new laptop since ive had this one for over 5 years now with 3 of those years it being the only internet access in a house with at least three other guys so the massive amounts of porn/virus dl'ing and lack of hard drive space (30gigs) and slow processing power leave me needing a new one. that and the motherboard is sort of fried.

i use a dell inspiron now and it really has been a great comp super durable and reliable so im thinking i want to stick with a similar model. that being said i want an up-to-date dell but all the ones on the website have vista and i dont want to have to use that over xp. i no i can just wipe the hd and put xp on there, i guess thats no biggie but thatll add cost.

spec wise looking for at least 6600 video, 2gig mem, and solid processing power probably 2.4-ish?. was wondering what suggestions anyone has as to what i should look into getting. any thoughts/suggestions help is much reppreciated.

If you aren't opposed to get an Apple machine, I'd say get a macbook pro (if you can afford it) Being a computer programmer who does all his working in Microsoft Windows, coming home to my Macs is like a fucking godsend. Don't need to worry about all the bullshit I have to deal with at work. Shit just works. Don't buy into the whole "there's no software for mac" hype that Windows zealots will tell you. Anything you can run on a Windows box you can run in OS X with the one exception of a few games... and for that you can install Windows on the Macbook and boot into that for gaming. I picked up a regular macbook a few months back and I love the thing.

Just my two cents.

you can also run linux on the mac. i just hate that they are overpriced hype. you're paying extra for the good software though.

^^ very true. you are paying for great hardware.

i have a buddy who has a mac and he cant play some of the fights in the fights sections though. are there programs that run on macs to watch files like nsv?

besides that i have looked into macs a little even though ive never given them much attention as ive always been a pc guy. price-wise they seem pretty comperable but im just not sure i wanna make the move to apple.

Well, nsv is strictly a Winamp format and there is no 'native' way to play them in OS X. I say native because you can actually run windows applications in OS X with a program called Crossover Office. It's not like running a virtual machine where you have windows running, you run just the application. I've used it numerous times for Winamp but have since stopped using it. As for any other format, you can play them in Quicktime by installing Perian, which is just about every codec you could imagine OR using VLC (videoloan.org) which will also play just about anything you throw at it.

If you are comfortable with windows machines and don't mind having to use antivirus and spyware scanners, then stick with what you know. However, if you want to try something newer, easier, more stable, and just better (in my opinion), I highly recommend picking up a Mac.

It depends on how much you want to spend. Just go to

http://www.newegg.com/

and find something that meets your needs and isnt beyond your price range

Personally I wouldnt go with a Mac, I havent used an apple computer since I was a little kid. I don't like the idea of having to use their hardware, thats like Microsoft but worse. If they start allowing their OS on any PC then that would be absolutely great and I would be willing to give it a shot. Otherwise though upgrading is a pain and I dont know if Mac guys dual boot with Windows or use emulators. If they use windows emulator then it can be a pain in the ass getting windows programs(mostly games) working with a windows emulator I know this from using wine in linux.

Anyways nothing against Mac, its just not me so I can't really recommend it to someone else. Anything thats not Microsoft is good though.

those fuckers would never do that. that's one of the main reasons that they are so successful. they're slogan of 'IT JUST WORKS' is only relevant because there are no hardware incompatibilities. if they started to allow you to legally boot mac OS on a pc, with all of the different types of hardware, it would be as close to unstable as windows.

if a linux distro decided to build a computer with the hardware that matched their software perfectly, or even designed the OS for the hardware, it would be just as good if not superior.

ps- i know some dell systems came pre-installed with ubuntu last year, but i don't think ubuntu was designed for them.

Guys, I'm not sure if you know this, but OS X runs perfectly fine on (most) off the shelf, newer hardware. I'm writing this from a computer I built myself. Google the term "Hackintosh". Even plenty of laptops are fully supported. Yes, dell, hp, acer, etc...

The Operating System is just better than Windows (and linux, and I used to be a hardcore linux geek in college). Memory, processes, thread management is just better.
