View Full Version : Why do my muscles shrink so fast and so much?

As above. I have an ankle injury and havent been to the gym and damn. My tee shirts which I used to fill up nicely, and the arm area all snug around my biceps/triceps now hang loosely and I'm so angry with myself.

All just in 3 weeks??

I get injuries pretty often so about 3-4 months, I go out of action for about a week or 2, and in this short period, my muscles also shrink like crazy.

Im friggin pissed, my ankles are not 100% yet (about 90%) but im going to the gym regardless.

I do get back in shape really fast though, say, about 6-8 sessions in the gym and im back to my old form. But I need advice as to why I'm shrinking so fast when I get out of action.


I have friends who just play basketball and they are ripped and they gym like just twice a week. Even if they get injured and get out of gym action for a month for 2, they still maintain the ripped look.

This is annoying me.

First and foremost, everyones body is different. Some people are naturally stronger than others and tend to stay ripped without really putting a lot of effort into it while others will struggle to even look "fit". That's my 2 cents. I'll leave the technical answers up to blevunly and the others.

Squirrel hit the big one, everyone is different. Maybe in 10 years all your buddies will be fat guys and you'll be the one in great shape. It's tougher to stay injury free as you get older.

Your kinda like me I go 1 week without working out and most of my definition is gone. I was reading this training thing about MMA and a chapter on training wit injuries. In it, it said to recover from an injury, train everything else except the injured part. Of course, this varies compared to whatever is injured, you probably aren't gonna train if you have an injured back or something serious like that. For your case tho, u should lift. Curls, Bench press, etc. Nothing that puts ANY strain on the ankles, cuz ONE wrong move and its back to the drawing board.

I kinda doubt your muscles are actually shrinking in 1-3 weeks. I think it probably has more to do with not having the blood pumping in those muscles, and not so much pumping when not training obviously.

but i dont know shit.

just a thought.
