View Full Version : What gloves should I get?
Its time for me to get some real MMA gloves. Right now I have a pair of 12oz gloves that I use for bag work but I need to get useto wearing fingerless gloves and I need something for sparring. I never sparred MMA befor but I'm going to meat up with this guy that apparently has a contract with the UFC to fight in about six months, this is the perfect opportunity for me to get exposed to the all around game. I need answers from someone experienced with MMA sparing in what would be the best for me starting out...
I have been looking into Fairtex gloves and narrowed it down to the Ultimate Combat Gloves or the Ultimate NHB gloves below

the only difference is a small thumb strap. Also these Ouano official UFC Gloves look sweet.

but maby someone can reccomed a glove thats just as good for a better price... I also probably need shin guards any advice on those would be great.
IŽd say the last ones look the best when you consider gripping power. Buy them. And in the end, does it really matter what kind of gloves you have, good ones or good ones? The most expensive are the best, usually.
If I wanted the most expensive I would get real pride gloves, I can only find them in Japan and they are $260.
If I'm not going to have any fights for a while... would I be better off getting a glove spacificly for training like these ones from Combat sports?

or Fairtex NHB sparring gloves?

These Gameness/primetime gloves look like they could be good for sparring, anyone have experience with them?

IŽd say buy the real gloves instead of sparring ones.
Do you train? I'm looking for someone experienced in MMA training....
Fantouz 08-22-2006, 04:20 PM I don't train in MMA, but I would try the gloves on first. For comfort and feel. If you are going to use them for sparring you will have the gloves on for many hours a day, which is why comfort would be a priority for me.
From just the pics i thought these ones looked decent:

They have a big padded area which would protect your fingers and knuckles when striking so you wouldn't pick needless injuries during training.
Anyway, that is just my approach if i were to buy new gloves.
I wish I could try them on first, but I can't because I will be ordering them over the internet.
LabRat 08-23-2006, 10:33 PM If you're going to be sparring under MMA rules, the Fairtex or Twins sparring gloves are the best you'll find. Your sparring partners won't thank you for hitting them with 4oz gloves unless you've got a fight right around the corner. If you've got your heart set on 4oz ones, you won't go wrong with Fairtex gear. I haven't tried the Gameness ones, but they look pretty sweet.
As for Pride gloves: a UK store (http://www.fightgear.net/en-gb/dept_6.html )has very similar ones designed by the people behind the Pride ones for a pretty good price (well, good if you're in the UK at least, I don't know how much the shipping and exchange rate would sting to the US). I haven't tried these either, but they look pretty cool and apparently are good for sparring or comp use. Hope that ramble was some help
supersudo 08-24-2006, 12:12 AM get the sparring ones.. "shooto" style gloves.. the **ONLY** time u'd ever want to get the 4oz is when u're actually going to FIGHT!
getting the 4oz to train in is just a waste of money...
yes, i train.. but i'm not really serious about fighting as a career though =]
I'm getting the Primetime training gloves.
dynamitemitch 08-28-2006, 12:15 AM i have a pair of boess gloves. They are pretty good though
whiplash 08-28-2006, 05:31 AM Fairtex
Cleto Reyes has new MMA gloves
hambik 08-28-2006, 08:52 AM what are the best gloves 2 buy?
I got the gloves, they are a little lose side to side I hope there not too big... but the padding is awsome I can hit my heavy bag full power.
LabRat 08-31-2006, 07:04 PM You're using wraps, right EVIL? If you're wrapping your hands and find the gloves still slipping a little, try switching the way you wrap or getting longer wraps to pad them out a little
After using the gloves alot more I think they fit great and no I'm not using wraps the wrist strap works good enough. I think the leather just needed broken in because they are new.

get the truth fightwear gloves, i am a fighter trust me they work great for ring and practice and they are dirt cheap
I tried the gloves with the wraps and they do help alot.
hbenjaafar 09-08-2006, 06:14 AM Yeah Wraps are cheap $2, and soo important, heavy hands Break wrists.... but wraps save them. Gloves are a great investment if you strike on the ground, must have saved my hands and wrists a dozen times when i hit the ground and not the chump under me. Mine cost 60$ and have the covered thumb, all in all not bad (crappy workmanship, the GF had to sew them a few times.. but jsut allong the stiching)
finjust 09-10-2006, 02:18 AM the ones that feel the best and protect your hand.. WRAP your hands under the glove or regret it later. Even if you dont need wraps now cause you dont have the power to actually break your wrist you'll have that power soon so you may as well get in the habit.
