View Full Version : Best way to beat wrestler @ grappleing
ericd13 04-18-2008, 09:29 AM so me and my friend usually mess around at my high school. i don't actually train bjj but i mess around quite often. so recently my other good friend who is a state champ wrestler came to roll with us. even though he didn't know any subs he was a pain in the ass to sub.
so i was wondering what is the best way to beat a wrestler at grappling besides taking him down?
thanks a lot.

ericd13 04-18-2008, 06:07 PM Fuck that. Yes they are. Anderson Salva stops them. but that includes striking.
jukeboxhero 04-18-2008, 06:19 PM A wrestler who adapts to BJJ/submission graplling well..... watch out. You aint' gon' touch dem bitches.
ninjashoes 04-18-2008, 07:13 PM the best advice I can give is to work on your setups
if he is a pure wrestler then you should be able to sub him easily but if he has some kind of sub defense than his sub defense must be better then your attacks because even if hes putting you on your back you should be able to work your gaurd and armbar, triangle, guillotine etc
maybe he is just strong and you need to work on your setups and functional strength
YouFrgotPoland 04-18-2008, 08:35 PM Seriously though, a lot of pure wrestlers that start sub wrestling can get caught in some easy subs. Like if he tries to shoot in for a doubleleg, go for the guillotine, he won't be used to having to protect his neck.
Cameron 04-18-2008, 08:37 PM i could use some advice too i roll with this one guy 6'4 270 lbs and im 5'8 and 143 lbs and he is a judo black belt and he rolls me and stals and holds me down. he cant sub me but i have to work insanely hard just to get to guard and i occasionaly sub him. but he holds me down and slows the game down well how do i beat him?

you'll only get better against jokers like that - take it as a challenge instead of some great insurmountable obstacle

Never back down!!!!!!!!!!
ninjashoes 04-19-2008, 02:44 PM why worry about subbing someone in practice anyway? I mean if anything you want your practice buddies to be as strong as possible

true, but he's trying to find a way to get better in the room so when he goes up against a good wrestler in a tournament or something he's ready
btw i'd suggest working on sweeps and triangle set ups
Resin 04-19-2008, 07:40 PM fag
ninjashoes 04-19-2008, 07:50 PM what about leglocks? pretty much everyone sucks at defending those and a strong wrestler cant muscle out of them
look at brock vs mir

i'll cover my ass hole with some maple syrup so when you lick it up you get sticky

yeah, and like you said it's all about the set ups, cause good wrestlers keep you flat and you can't just go for them against good wrestlers,
half guard FTW
nakedrear 04-23-2008, 05:16 PM For an easy kill off sprawl = anaconda.
For actually having to do some jiujitsu = the half-guard sweeping game works nice. A lot of powerful wrestlers are hard to sub from guard, but aren't shit off their back. You might not be able to take him down, so sweep. Half guard is a great sweeping position.

anacondo won't work too often because wrestlers are freakishly strong, and they have a great base. half guard sweeps pwn against good wrestlers though, but a wrestler will always be trying to come up with a single if they get put on their back and you try to pass, so when that happens....
DARCE

Agree on that trying for the single and Darce. As for Anaconda, I think it is underated. If you put it on and try to roll like you are rolling in the hay, he won't budge. I take my knee and kick the fuck out of the trapped arm as I go, and almost everybody rolls. Once we are both on our backs, I've never had any problems finishing even very strong wrestlers.
I think the greatest difficulty with the anaconda is guys who are wary and don't let you get grips and stuff, that gets annoying and you have to move on. Then again, maybe I just have more success cause I'm tall with long arms.

those arms help you for sure, i just find myself muscling throught the anadonda, with the darce even from the sprawl i think it is easier to roll cause if they resist, your forearm grinds the nerve on the side of the neck and it hurts like a bitch, plus if they keep the base you can choke them from that position, so they have to roll or else they stay in pain and maybe tap or get put to sleep from the choke
Resin 04-26-2008, 01:46 AM narb is gay and retarded.
Obi Narb Kenobi 04-26-2008, 02:58 AM narb is a mundials finalist and US open finalist and would pwn me.
fixed
abelinkinyang 04-28-2008, 07:01 AM yeah dood, gotta learn from frank trigg rnc if you can actually get that position with a state champ, but guillotine usually work cuz wrestlers r more aggressive with em double legs
Resin 04-28-2008, 08:41 PM I think the best way to beat a wrestler is of course with a chair shot.

I like this poster a lot.
you need to post everyday now.
jukeboxhero 04-29-2008, 05:39 AM haha, I'll do my best.
When i roll against wrestlers I like to tie them up in guard and wear themselves out. Then I will through up a triangle or an armbar. They are strong but they tend to be really open for triangles.
xhale 06-19-2008, 10:58 PM rubber guard!
dynamitemitch 06-19-2008, 11:05 PM i actually agree with the rubber guard assessment because a lot of wrestlers like to posture setting a lot of stuff up for you. im personally not flexible enough to do it but i think its a good option

I agree. They'll push really hard into you. I'll use spider guard as the entry into the triangle, and they'll push themselves into it all the time.
The Natural 06-24-2008, 08:34 PM dynamite mitch is a chump. that being said overhook push on the head to omaplatta. atleast youll get the sweep.

They are usually really bad about falling into the leg triangle
