meh, i could make a list of just as many reason why it's not. i use both (mostly linux) but have come to realize that it's not for everyone and what's better for me and you doesn't always correlate with the average user.

I use windows xp on my home comp(fuck vista) but I have to get comfortable with Linux because thats what most webservers seem to use.

true, man. its stability and security make it a great choice for that. let me clear it up, the reason that i don't think it's good for everyone is the lack of private software support. im in graphic design and while i use linux for fun, i can't use it to work. adobe doesn't make any product for us. the freeware options suck as well. i mean, the gimp and inkscape are good, but nowhere near pro level as far as features go. not to mention lack of driver support, but im sure that'll improve soon enough.

pretty good overview on that link there ninja. i love linux. there are pros and cons to it just like windows. i've been fully immersed in linux for a good 5 or 6 years at this point, and i ABSOLUTELY LOVE IT!!! it's so customizable.

you can limit an installation to exactly what you need and don't need. for example, you can get it installed onto like a piece of shit 386 machine with 32 MB of RAM and a 200 MB hard drive and since you've installed nothing but the kernel, a few user space utilities, and a http server it is easily powerful enough to run a small-scale website. by comparison, if you tried to put windows on a 386 it'd be like "LOL WTF" and you would pretty much be hosed. not that i want to use a 386 as a web server, but the point is that i could.

but like deegs is saying, it's not for everybody. you really have to be a fucking nerd to figure it out and like it. i have it installed on all my laptops because that way if i leave it sitting around at a friends house or something and some ass tries to pick it up and fuck with it they're like "uh wtf is this" and put it back down.

another nice thing about linux is the portability between architectures. for example, i had this old imac G3 box collecting dust so i grabbed it and wanted to make it useful, and found i couldn't put anything newer than OS X 10.3.9 on it which is old as fuck now, so instead i downloaded the powerpc distribution of debian linux and got it up and running with that. after some software optimizations, it's fairly quick for what the machine is.
