It's called the Crazy Monkey Defense and it is very useful. The best basic defense IMO. It is great for beginners to learn it. It will build confidence in them and that is very important in exchanges.

What about to use it all the time in sparring or in a pro fight? Ive heard it leaves you open for body shots but im curious what do you think?

it can leave your body open. just about every style will have a set back or a way around it, its all about working on it to fit you, i like to use the crazy monkey to block sometimes and sometimes i like to try and scoop the punches

the best way i can describe it is you use your middle finger to part your hair directly in the middle, grab the back of your head, one eye behind your bicep and the other peaking from around your bicep so you can see. when ever you have the shot coming deflect it
does that make sense

handsoffire it's good for pros too. About the body, you're in a hunchback stance so your body is further away and to block body shots you kind of dip with your legs and your elbows should be close to your body if not touching it. To blockk straight body shots you simply dip and twist so that your forearm blocks in the middle of your body. Youtube Rodney King Crazy Monkey and you can see a couple of free examples how it works.

crazy monkey is a Great Defensive style..i used to train MMA on and off and in my country most MMA schools use a combination of muaythai and bjj.so basically almost all fighters fight the same way.A lack of wrestling and other genres down here.anyways, when i heard rodney king and rigan machado were coming down for a 3 day mma retreat i signed up on the spot, though i hadnt trained like in 6 months or so.
most of the people who came for the seminar were caucasians who dwarfed me so was abit intimidated when sparring came along.but with the crazy monkey system, was able to get tagged alot less and also get hit mostly in my arms which bred my confidence(im like ok,im one minute in and have not been slaughtered yet,i must be doing something right..lol..)..
when i went back to training at my school,i was able to spar equally with many of the more experienced guys who were shocked at the vast improvement of my defence.all in all,a very good system, though you have to follow it to the T or risk uppercuts.
P.S I also had the opportunity to roll with Rigan Machado. He's a GOD!!!No offence to my local trainers, but training with him,he did very very subtle things, shifting the weight here, laying your chin over there..minute things that made a world of a difference.
