Truth Revealed Behind Assault of “Irish” Billy Collins Jr., Luis Resto Comes Clean After 25 Years

New York City (April 3, 2008) – The truth has finally been revealed regarding one of sports’ darkest hours. Former prize fighter Luis Resto admitted today at a press conference in New York City that he not only battered “Irish” Billy Collins Jr. for ten rounds during a boxing match, with padding-removed gloves, but that his knuckles were pre-cast with tape soaked in plaster of Paris - before the hollowed gloves were placed over his fists..

As the 25-year-anniversary approaches of the incident that created a sensational scandal following the Collins-Resto welterweight bout at Madison Square Garden in 1983, Bronx native Resto finally came clean – supplying many details during a monumental media gathering at Jack Demsey’s (correct spelling) in midtown Manhattan.

The film Cornered exposes the whole truth behind what really happened that June evening in the world’s most famous arena. Cornered reveals the lurid chain of events that allowed a boxer to endure a 30-minute assault. What transpired before and during the Collins-Resto fight was so heinous it led to Resto’s conviction, incarceration and lifetime ban from boxing. The brutally-beaten Collins quickly fell into a tragic downward spiral.

Cornered picks up with the lives of those people still affected by the crime 25 years later and answers many unanswered questions such as why was this despicable act carried out for the Collins-Resto fight in particular? And, how did the perpetrators manage to get the tampered gloves past New York State Athletic Commission officials? The film helps boxing gain closure to an open wound, but will justice finally be served for the Collins family estate?

Equipped with today’s new information, Marc R. Thompson of Manhattan’s Pulvers, Pulvers and Thompson, the attorney for Andrea Collins-Nile, widow of late the Billy Collins Jr., has filed of a motion to reopen the case of the Collins-Resto scandal with the Federal District Court against the State of New York. A copy of the motion will be made available to the media shortly.

Man him and Panama should be burned at the stake. This was actually the underrcard of Duran/Moore, making it probably the most brutal boxing card in history. Despite the cheating, this was one of the greatest fights I ever saw. It speaks a lot about Billy Collins to have been able to withstand those shots for a full fight. His face was a mess.

Panama Lewis responds!

Lewis: Resto is confused!
By Lee Bates
Upon reading the Fightnews report of Luis Resto admitting that his knuckles were pre-cast with tape soaked in plaster of Paris before hollowed gloves were placed over his fists in his tragic bout with Billy Collins Jr. nearly 25 years ago, Resto's former trainer Panama Lewis had the following response. "I really don't understand why Resto is saying these things. Obviously he is confused. I never even wrapped his hands for that fight." In a February 27th, 2008 deposition, Resto claimed that Lewis wrapped his right hand and cutman Artie Curley wrapped his left. Lewis maintains that both Resto's hands were wrapped by Curley. "I already served time for something I never did and don't know why he feels he needs to bring something like this up. My father passed away of a heart attack when I was incarcerated and the rest of my family suffered as well. I myself have suffered a heart attack and don't need to even be thinking about this issue anymore. I have nothing bad to say about Resto and will continue to pray for him."

Panama is a sleazy lying piece of shit!

Very interesting development. I believe it was you who hinted at this tragedy some time back in a thread and it made me look up the whole scenario. Good posting. Repped.

Yeah I think I made a thread about it before. I mean boxing is a dangerous sport, you see people elbow, headbutt, low blow, do steroids, ect, all sorts of cheating to get ahead, but taking the stuffing out of your gloves is just criminal.

BTW they got the full fight on Youtube, if you guys havent seen it check it out, one of the most action packed and brutal fights you'll ever see. Plus Jake fucking Lamotta and his wife Vicki commentates haha

That's so fucked up. If he wouldn't have died 9 months later he was set to go blind.

He died in a car accident that could just as well have happened because of the blurred vision and dizzyness suffered from this beating

This all came out cause Resto went to Collins widow and told her. He said he couldn't live with the secret anymore after 25 years. Just read about it today on ESPN.com. Panama is definately a lying sleaze though.

At least he has a soul then. Panana Lewis could give a fuck less. His stories are always contradicting. I read an interview iwth him before where he broke down into tears saying it was a terrible mistake and he feels guilt for it every day, but you ask him now and he says he didnt do anything and he was falsly imprisoned
