im a south paw and im realitivly new to boxing i did alot of karate so my kicking part of my stand up is ok. how ever i just really started working my hands. my coach believes in learning to do stand up orthodox and south paw. my question is how important is this? or should i just focus more on getting my hands better then learning orthodox? do i need to learn orthodox at all really?

orthodox is really important more so than hand speed a boxer that brawls with fast hands usualy loses to an orthodox boxer idk bout mma though

It's one of those nice to have things that IMO come later once you have the basics down. You definitely do not need to know how to fight both ways.

You're a south paw because you're left handed right? Not because it feels better to put your right hand foward.

I my base my standup style on a mix of karate (american tkd) and boxing. My left leg is not as quick as my right leg so I keep my right leg out front. This makes me fight southpaw when it comes to boxing. This also puts me in a right handed Judo stance so everything fits right.
Being able to switch from orthodox to southpaw isnt necessary but it can come in handy in some situations. I say practice your boxing like you would karate, i.e. for warmup do your punches and combos equally on both sides. This will train both sides and develop some muscle memory. When you spar, go southpaw and only use orthodox when the situation deems it necessary.
Being able to switch up your game on the fly is what makes great fighters great. Watch Machida and do everything he does.

When I sparred I was a right handed southpaw cause I had a pretty good double and triple jab with my power hand, it is also good for hooks having your power hand in closer. You are severly limited however for power on your cross.

i just learned and always did south paw when i did karate when i was young and now that my gym is starting to do stand up i still am. i wrestled in that stance as well so i am a right hand but i box/fight south paw. i cant jab to save my life with my left hand.

You can't jab with your left? Can you cross with it?

that's weird. I always found the jab and especially the hook to be much easier motions than the cross.

Well De La Hoya, Tyson, and Frzier all fought out of stance and made it work so it's possible. I used to use a southpaw stance and had a decent cross with a vertical fist, but after playing around with orthodox for a while I find it much more balanced. To answer your original question learning to box south paw and orthodox is useful, but since you're a beginner you should really focus on one or the other.

I used to train, for MMA though not really specifically boxing. Even though I did spar under boxing rules at times. No one was taking competing seriously so I stopped.
