Plus it can be useful for gnp. in the lower weight classes i would say bjj and any type of boxing, maybe muy tai, but i think muy tai would be better on heavier fighters with strong wrestling backgrounds. sombo is good cuz its all about balance. One of these men, Vasili Oshchepkov, taught judo and karate to elite Red Army forces at the Central Red Army House. He had earned his nidan (second degree black belt out of then five only) from judo’s founder, Jigoro Kano, and used some of the Osensei’s philosophy in formulating the early development of the new Russian art.

Sambo, however, was born of native Russian and other regional styles of grappling and combative wrestling bolstered with the most useful and adaptable concepts and techniques from the rest of the world.

As the buffer between Europe and Asia, Russia had more than ample opportunities to sift through the martial skills of various invaders. The task of developing and organizing Russian military hand-to-hand combat training fell to K. Voroshilov, who in turn, created the NKVD physical training center, “Dinamo.”

Spiridonov was a combat veteran of World War I, and one of the first wrestling and self-defense instructors hired for Dinamo. His background included Greco-Roman wrestling, Free style wrestling, and many Slavic wrestling styles. As a “combatives investigator” for Dinamo, he traveled to Mongolia and China to observe their native fighting styles.

In 1923, Oshchepkov and Spiridinov collaborated with a team of other experts on a grant from the Soviet government to improve the Red Army’s hand-to-hand combat system. Spiridonov had envisioned integrating all of the world’s fighting systems into one comprehensive style that could adapt to any threat. Oshchepkov had observed Kano’s distillation of Tenjin Shin’yo Ryu jujitsu and Kito Ryu jujitsu into judo, and he had developed the insight required to evaluate and integrate combative techniques into a new system. Their development team was supplemented by Anatoly Kharlampiev and I.V. Vasiliev who also traveled the globe to study the native fighting arts of the world. Ten years in the making, their catalogue of techniques was instrumental in formulating the early framework of the art to be eventually referred to as Sambo. Here, Oshchepkov and Spiridonov’s improvements in Russian wrestling slipped into the military’s hand-to-hand-combat system.

Kharlampiev is often called the father of Sambo. This may be largely semantics since only he had the longevity and political connections to remain with the art while the new system was called “Sambo”. Spiridonov was the first to actually begin referring to the new system as one of the “S” variations cited above. He eventually developed a softer, more “aikido-like” system called Samoz that could be used by smaller, weaker practitioners or even wounded soldiers and secret agents. Spiridonov’s inspiration to develop Samoz stemmed from an injury that he suffered that greatly restricted his ability to practice Sambo or wrestling. Refined versions of Sambo are still used today or fused with specific Sambo applications to meet the needs of Russian commandos today.

Each technique for Sambo was carefully dissected and considered for its merits, and if found acceptable in unarmed combat, refined to reach Sambo’s ultimate goal: stop an armed or unarmed adversary in the least time possible. Thus, the best techniques of jujitsu and its softer cousin, Judo, entered the Sambo repertoire. When the techniques were perfected, they were woven into Sambo applications for personal self-defense, police, crowd control, border guards, secret police, dignitary protection, psychiatric hospital staff, military, and commandos.
GCSD Fighter 09-14-2006, 04:20 AM Fedor is probably good at mma because combat sambo competitions basically are mma. It's funny though the guys who developed Sambo and BJJ are direct students of Jigoro Kano(the creator of Judo). Combat Sambo competitions are MMA with a gi. There is still high regard for pinning down an opponent also. xhale 09-14-2006, 09:59 AM jiujitsu and sambo derive from judo GCSD Fighter 09-14-2006, 04:04 PM jiujitsu and sambo derive from judo Judo came from Jiu Jitsu. Jigaro Kano removed the striking and called it Judo. Count Koma taught it as Jiu Jitsu to the Gracies, who adapted and innovated it. Sambo is an amalgamation of all the national Soviet styles in the 1930's. One of the founders who created the Sambo federation held a belt in Judo. biz9lljames 10-07-2006, 10:45 PM greco for big guys. toofastfiveoh 10-12-2006, 04:10 AM Judo is badass cuz you have those badass hip throws like Karo did to diego skunknuts[ADR] 10-16-2006, 06:44 AM BJJ/Sambo/Muay Thai/Wrestling/Judo unstoppable forces when used correctly Swampeast 10-17-2006, 03:39 AM Judo is a great sport and good for learning throws but it is different when someone isn't wearing a gi....I personally would think a form of wrestling would be what I would prefer....but as for others as long as you can easily go from form to form it doesn't matter what you know!! spirkov 10-27-2006, 01:21 PM Judo + Sambo + Muay Shin^ 10-31-2006, 11:07 PM Judo came from Jiu Jitsu. Jigaro Kano removed the striking and called it Judo. Count Koma taught it as Jiu Jitsu to the Gracies, who adapted and innovated it. I think the original art of which judo and other mas have developed from is usually referred to as jujutsu. It might be due to differences in spelling the japanese words that jiu jitsu and jujutsu are spelled differently. And for the threadstartes I'd ad sambo becouse if sambo is in there is more focus on leg locks. brycelei 11-01-2006, 08:15 AM For grappling: Judo for upper body takedowns/throws. Wrestling for leg attack takedowns, strong base, and staying on top. BJJ for submissions and sweeps. Sambo for leglocks. For striking: Muay Thai for elbows, knees, and kicks. Boxing for punches and head movement. After that, all you need is conditioning, heart, and a chin. hado3 11-08-2006, 05:53 PM screw sambo and judo wrestling is way better than judo BJJ/Wrestling/Muay Thai Bruno_Barbarian 11-23-2006, 01:55 AM Freestyle wrestling + Bjj = great grappling!!!!
