Pretty rough but are there rules that you can't retire a number for a certain amount of years? Why isn't 80 retired for the niners? This is a brutality.

apparently Rice has said it was cool with him... If I was Isaac Bruce... I would say thanks but no thanks Jerry, I respect you too much, I'll wear another number.

Yeah I have a big problem with this. If anyone's # should be immediately off limits for ever it is Jerry. Unanimously the best WR ever.

#80 on the SF 49ers Jerr... Isaac Bruce? FUCK THAT!

#22 of the Dallas Cowboys... Quentin Griffin...
I know Bruce is a whole different level as someone like QG, who isn't in the league anymore, but it just doesn't make sense to allow that.

If I was a player, I would say I was fine with it, with the hope that someone will step up and say it is ridiculous.

If some QB comes to New England and wears #12 eventually, I will rip on him. I don't give a fuck who it is.

I agree whole-heartedly with your Brady statement, Brady arguably the best quarterback ever... Jerry Rice the best wide receiver ever... but Emmitt was great for the Cowboys, not amongst the top rb's ever but i do see your point.

This is total MADNESS and should NOT be allowed UNLESS Jerry Rice said it was ok. WTF are the Niners Thinking Not retiring his #, Stupid Fucks.

Surprised the niners haven't already retired his jersey.

And about Jerry saying it's ok... that doesn't mean much to me because he should've never been put in the awkward position to have to say NO. that's someone elses job.

Emmitt can be argued as the greatest. He has the most yards ever, the most TDs ever and 3 SB rings. Oh yeah, 1990 Rookie of the Year, 1993 Regular season MVP and Superbowl MVP.
4 Time NFL rushing leader as well.

BTW, I used Emmitt as an example, because Bigbadroy is a Cowboys fan.

the ONLY reason Emmitt holds the rushing record Is because Barry Sanders retired WAY too early, if he didn't retire, Barry would own the Rushing Record.

I was a big fan of Barry's but it's not Emmitt's fault that he quit. give him some credit... he earnd it.

It would be Jim Browns record if he hadn't retired but he did and so did Barry. Emmitt got it done and hes the one in the record books. If he's not a top back of all time I would like to know who is. Jerry clearly wasn't going to say "No he cant wear that" because Jerry is a good guy but the Niners org should have retired the jersey or at least strongly suggested to pick another number. Some of the blame is on Bruce of course too.

Well I apologize... when I think of the top running backs ever I think of Jim Brown, Walter Payton, OJ Simpson, Eric Dickerson and Barry Sanders... but point taken, those are impressive numbers. It also should be said, that Emmitt played on one of the greatest teams of all time as well.

oh, don't get me wrong, I love Emmitt Smith as a football player and I would NEVER say he didn't earn his, that man took a beating in the years he played, he def. deserves it. I was just saying IF Barry didn't quit, that he would own the record. Barry was a dumbass and a baby for walking out like he did.

Barry would have crushed Browns yardage total.

Also Tomlinson will absolutely smash the td record. But I have been corrected... Emmitt can be argued amongst the top 6 or 7 backs ever.

easily on both of those things you talk about. to bad I can't say that about Franco. although Franco was a beast when he played, top 10 IMO.

I don't like speculation about RBs career numbers. Saying RBs would of done this or that if they kept playing is a moot point. The average NFL RB is in the league less than 2 years. Some of them just because it is a tough business, but play after play they take a shot.

Emmitt IMO is among the best ever in the history of the game because the passion and pride he played with. At one point he was written off like he was ALL DONE, when he was only 29 years old. He rebounded because he demanded excellence, much like the late Walter Payton. He wasn't the fastest, strongest of biggest, but he knew all of that, and didn't let it slow him down.

Based on his current pace, LT will smash Emmitt's record, but if he can continue his current pace, he himself jumps into the elite group of backs of all-time because of production AND durability. I can remember a lot of guys projected to become the next big thing at HB, only to have a max of 5 or 6 good years and fade out. Just last season, Larry Johnson... Former MVP Shaun Alexander is on the bring of being released for Julius Jones and first round bust TJ Duckett.

HAHA yeah I was just getting into football at the time he was around, he would never of been on this list even if he was the most durable. Hell of a couple of years though.
