the only time the strength to weight ratio drops, is one you gain more fat than muscle.

blevunly
03-03-2008, 04:43 AM
obviously. but the strength to weight ratio decreases.

Not necessarily, it's possible to remain or even create a higher strength to weight ratio by gaining weight. But more times than not you're correct cause when most people gain weight they aren't watching their diet and a good portion is fat or if people gain weight through sarcoplasmic hypertrophy it will just be like dead weight.

VENDO

Improving your strength to weight ratio is not just about losing weight. It’s about losing the right kind of weight. The traditional bathroom scale is the standard tool used to measure weight change, but the numbers you see on the scale are often misleading because “scale weight” does not distinguish between “fat mass” and “lean body mass.” Nonessential fat mass reduction is the target for improving your strength to weight ratio.

So if your a fat rollie pollie motherfucker, yeah the strength to weight ratio drops.
Clearly.

all it takes is some simple division. i used the squat. divide the weight moved by the weightclass limit

it doesn't always work, but it's pretty damn overwhelmingly in favour of what i said

Good point deegs, but I still hold that if fat levels are kept down and sarcoplasmic hypertrophy is kept to a minimum the strength to weight ratio should increase, because the majority of the mass your gaining will be usable muscle fibers. After a certain point like once you reach 300lbs you are pushing human limits to retain your strength to weight ratioand it is unlikely you will succeed.

yes, the stats seem to prove your point. the ratio increases until it reaches its high at 165. perhaps ideal athletic weight?

Ideal athletic weight to height ratio more likely. Cause I weigh that and am 6'1 This guy (Wade Hooper) is 5'3 so that's a huge difference in muscle mass on our bodies.

i'd probably be right around 200

I just checked westside's site and some of them have higher totals then the record holders at the usapowerlifting site. For instance Phill Harrington averages out to 11.37 at a bodyweight of 197 that tops everyone elses ratio on the previous list.

http://www.westside-barbell.com/elite_members.htm

I don't know that I believe in an optimal weight as long as it's functional muscle then the weight gained would be more benificial then detremintal. Also another factor is your explosive strength without a decent amount explosive strength a good portion of your maximal strength will lay dormant.

EDIT: To further clarify on what I meean by lay dormant. Explosive strength allows the powerlifter to power(for lack of better words) through sticking points that would otherwise cancell out the lift. Westside knows this and trains for it and that is why they dominate the powerlifting world.

I have an injured/strained/pinched right trap. Exercise causes tension, that causes insane headaches to the point of almost vomit and inability to open eyes.

Lucky for me only squatting causes death headaches (weight of the bar on my muscle) while most other exercise just causes a mild discomfort headache. I am still in this but I won't be able to continue to push to the extent I was.

has anyone actually been able to it yet?

I tried doing it on the weekend, I was able to get my wrist level to my chin...but from what I understand full range of motion means the wrist has to be level with the collar bone.

I'll try again, and see if someone can videotape it.

My current stats:

5'5", 130 lbs@ roughly 5% BF.

deegs
08-12-2008, 05:04 PM
chin over the bar is all that's required. i wish i was 130lbs.

danxgerous
08-12-2008, 06:16 PM
i tried it the other day and i cant even budge. like i cant even lift my body at all. and i can do ~20 pull-ups normally.

Edge
08-12-2008, 08:29 PM
If all that is required is chin over the bar, then i can already do it...which disqualifies me from this contest.

I guess I should state that i have a slight advantage in that when I do chin/pullups I normally have added weight attached to my waist (ala GSP) usually around 45lbs 8X so doing my own bodyweight is very easy. And I have been bouldering for almost 2 years. Bouldering is a style of rock climbing that is more focused on upper body strength.

hey guys,

for those intersted in an isolated exercise to help with the one arm pullup. I just came up with an exercise yesterday at my gym, i'm sure it has been done before but iv'e never seen anyone do it.

1)go to a lat pulldown machine
2)switch the lateral bar to a cable grip
3)mimic a one arm pullup.

use a pyramid style (10,8,6) rep scheme, to keep your body in a state of shock.

by using a machine it will allow you to focus on technique with lower weight, and you can gradually build up your strength by slowly increasing the weight as you progress.

good luck.
