They look so freakin' rank. I'm hella scared of gettin' them. It seems that the treatment doesn't work, once the cartilage is damaged that's it. Is this the case? I'm no pretty boy don't get me wrong but there's something about the look of those ears that makes me literally sick to the stomach.

is there anything to do after rolling to help prevent it like icing you ears or something?

dza_one
08-15-2006, 07:45 AM
you can ice them, but your best bet would be to get the ear guards wrestlers wear

Why do people not wear headgear? I never understood this, rubbing your ears on the mat is one painful fuckin feeling. I know you can get them from being punched and kicked in teh ear too though.

Cauliflower ear or perichondrial hematoma is a condition common among rugby players (particularly forwards), boxers, martial artists and wrestlers. If the external portion of the ear is constantly hit or bashed around, a blood clot may develop under the perichondrium. This separates the cartilage from the overlying perichondrium that is its source of nutrients, causing the cartilage to die. When this happens, the outer ear becomes permanently swollen and deformed.

Headgear that protects the ears is worn in many martial sports to help prevent this condition.

Among some athletes, it is seen as a badge of honor, a scar of experience.
[edit]

Treatment

When a blood clot in the outer ear occurs, it is important to contact a doctor immediately and have it treated. The doctor will evacuate the blood clot and apply a compressing tie to the outer ear to reconnect the perichondrium and the cartilage. One has to keep the compressing tie for some time, generally 10 days, to prevent the blood clot from filling up again. The outer ear is prone to infections and therefore antibiotics are usually ordered.

Historically, leeches were used in order to reduce swelling.[citation needed]

Swampeast

It is pretty simple to keep from getting bad cases of it as long as you wear headgear. I personally recommend the hurricanes by asics!! You can hear 100 percent out of them and don't bother you so bad while you are practicing!

How do they drain them? A syringe?

The Fire
10-22-2006, 07:57 AM
My right ear is a little cauliflowerd up, when I got it drained the last time the cartalidge at the top was bent and had fused to itself so now it looks like there is a chunk missing at the top ala Holyfield.

When they start to get filled with blood now, I wear the headgear so that they don't get too bad. When the swelling goes back down I ditch them again. Other than that I train without them.

That's how doc does mine. They can also cut them with a razor and squeeze the fluid out if it is all not in one or two pockets so that they syringe can easily get it.

reviving the thread. i've only been training bjj about a month. we roll pretty hard in practice and today my left ear kinda hurt and i feel a little bump along the inner part of my ear. that part of my ear definitely feels thicker than the same part on my right ear. it also doesnt particularly feel like fluid... feels kinda hard. any chance that its the beginning of cauliflower? its not along the outside edge of the ear, its closer to the canal, the inner curve.

Without knowing a hell of a lot, what I HEARD was as the skin seperates from the cartilage, your normal healing process invites fluid in to the space between, and if the fluid and blood isn't drained (a la Smashing Machine and Bisping in TUF) this can harden to form the cauliflower look that we all know and love. If it's hard straight away, mebbe you've just forced some of that existing cartilage to "herniate" or displace.

Thanks Gabe, now someone answer my question.

Narbegesicht
10-12-2008, 03:15 AM
is it hard? do you feel a ball?

Rob
10-12-2008, 03:24 AM
Not really hard only on the fold parts where it should naturally be hard. I got a similar bruise a few weeks ago on my left ear but this week after sustaining some decent GnP I have a bruised right ear.

It's purple but I can't really feel a lump or ball.

Narbegesicht
10-12-2008, 03:26 AM
well it could be brand new and fresh coli ear, is it squisshy?

Narbegesicht
10-12-2008, 03:26 AM
if you have a ball, and it is purple, and it is squishy it is coli ear and you are officially pwn

Rob
10-12-2008, 03:29 AM
It feels sort of hard so I can't really squish it to feel anything inside it. Hopefully it's just bruising. I'm probably going to have to buy some ear guards.

Narbegesicht
10-12-2008, 03:32 AM
unfortunately it sounds like just a bruise, usually when coli is fresh it blows up and looks like a big blue berry poping out of your ear, or it is not colored and you feel squshiness

Rob
10-12-2008, 03:35 AM
It's bittersweet.

If I develop at least a bit of a cauliflower which I probably do since my ear isn't perfect I'll have to bad ass look but it is good that I'm not going to have a fucker like Thompson had.

I think I might have to invest in an ear guard.
