View Full Version : Hong-Man Choi
I´d like your opinions on this guy.
He is huge (7´2", 360lbs), but is that all we need to know about him? He has won 8 matches and lost only 1, a decision to Remy Bonjasky ( Remy dominated tho).
Is he really a force or just a freak (his appearance makes me think he isn´t "normal" and suffers from overgrowth due to hormones)who overpowers his opponents by size and strenght. His latest win is against Semmy Schilt himself.
So, do you think he will remain succesful in K-1 and could/should he start fighting in MMA matches?
Fantouz 08-05-2006, 07:05 PM I think he is a freak. His win against Semmy Schilt is imo the equivalent of Bob Sapp's wins against Ernesto Hoost.
When Choi fought Sapp he gassed and couldnt move, sure his strenght, size and reach are a huge advantage but I see him as the next Bob Sapp of K1/MMA. Ie a brute force that will be taken apart eventually.
Altough you could say that he decisioned some big names, like Bonjasky, whereas old Sapp just kOed them (or got DQed), so his cardio could be up to the level.
I guess only time will tell whether he is the K1 equivalent of Nikolai Valuev in boxing; bu tI would bet that he is the "next Beast".
MMA~FAN 08-06-2006, 05:36 AM I'd like him to stay in K1
omegatron 08-07-2006, 01:45 AM Stay in K-1, he'll get killed if someone ground and pounds him
I think he'll remain successful. The guy at least puts in effort, unlike other giants like Akebono and Giant Silva.
that guy is huge, kinda interesting to watch though
Tom Stall 09-10-2006, 09:32 AM they give him bullshit decisions cause hes korean
DiscipleDX 09-14-2006, 08:40 PM Hong Man Choi is a decent athlete for a guy his size, good reflexes, solid technique but that decision he got against Semmy was some serious home cooking. If that fight is anywhere but Seoul Semmy wins 30-27. Choi is capable but I don't think he is a serious threat to win the Grand Prix Finals.
svr01 09-15-2006, 07:08 PM he is pretty good for his size but he should definately stay in K-1. he punches in a strange way and i guess any takedown fighter can take him down. his knees will probably be a mess after his K-1 career but that's better then a broken skull after fighting fedor;)
DiscipleDX 09-15-2006, 09:00 PM Yeah if Choi went MMA he would get his skull caved in, he isn't quick enough to defend takedowns.
Man.O.Fire9 09-19-2006, 09:36 PM I'm always up for watching a freakshow
tropicana619 10-02-2006, 07:29 PM He's only good business for K-1 because of their relations with South Korea. Too bad he's not very exciting.
He isn't all that great. At least he isn't pure spectacle, though. He tries.
omegatron 10-10-2006, 11:01 PM After his fight with LeBanner I think he's legit though he needs to work on his puching technique a little more.
Boondocksaints 11-06-2006, 04:47 AM Did Choi fight Sapp?
Squirrel 11-06-2006, 04:57 AM I posted his 3 fights against Akebono. Look them up.
Perko 11-06-2006, 01:12 PM He's only good business for K-1 because of their relations with South Korea. Too bad he's not very exciting.

exciting enough if u ask me
kashmir454 11-20-2006, 12:26 AM Ditch the freak shows, rewind K1 back to the 90s.
skunknuts[ADR] 11-20-2006, 09:45 AM yeah he should stay in K1 for a little bit before he comes to the big leagues!
ninjashoes 11-20-2006, 08:06 PM Choi is not a freakshow anymore, he has legit skill and uses his size effectively, when Sapp stops cheating he will be legit too
Tom Stall 11-21-2006, 09:54 AM ;223216']yeah he should stay in K1 for a little bit before he comes to the big leagues!
wtf u talkin about? k-1 is big enough.....
Benroliver 11-28-2006, 06:49 AM He is definately skilled.... but I think the loss in pure mobility and speed is what conqueres people of his stature. 250 pound fighters have more than enough strength to take anything down quickly... his added size doesnt make him that overpowering.
galenhousego 12-02-2006, 01:18 AM his win against Schilts was bs
didnt jlb recently beat him. Also jlb did say tho, that choi is tough and can be unbeatable with more experience.
Tom Stall 12-02-2006, 06:06 AM jlb won but it wasn't in a dominating fashion in which most people thought would happen
Boxercop50 12-06-2006, 08:42 PM Choi is just a HUGE guy who can throws his arms around. His reach is his only salvation.
Patrick 12-08-2006, 06:45 AM He's someone to watch. Semmy beat him.
I'd think he'd be interesting again Tim Sylvia.
In a freak show way against Mark Hunt although Hunt would out sharp him. If any one falls it'd be the big guy I guess.
Tom Stall 12-08-2006, 07:25 AM i don't think mark hunt is going to have an easy time with him
ninjashoes 12-08-2006, 12:31 PM Semmy got beat by Choi didnt he? That fight was boring as fuck.
Semmy got beat by Choi didnt he? That fight was boring as fuck.
it was a fishy, musashi type decision
Aussie 12-10-2006, 03:18 AM i still cant get over his size,he is a specticle, i think he should stay in K-1 for a while to further improve his striking then give mma a go,
Ferguson [GDR] 12-10-2006, 08:16 AM all i know is it's fun to say his name, so yeah i'm i fan.
BigCman 02-16-2007, 07:19 AM I am kind of conflicted on how i feel about him. I think sometimes hes shown some skill and sometimes he just relies on power strikes
schafer 02-17-2007, 01:52 AM I´d like your opinions on this guy.

his striking is somewhat sloppy imo. definitely not as crisp as most k-1 fighters. but it's effective.
if he can beat schilt, he can give anyone in k-1 a run for their money. i'm not saying it will happen, but it's a possibility
schafer 02-17-2007, 01:53 AM i still cant get over his size,he is a specticle, i think he should stay in K-1 for a while to further improve his striking then give mma a go,
there was a rumour floating around for a while that he was going to fight cc on pride's nye show. obviously, that didn't happen. but i wouldn't be surprised to see him fighting mma sometime during the next few years
shimeytsi 02-18-2007, 02:50 AM he's definitely a force to reckon with
Choi is not a freakshow anymore, he has legit skill and uses his size effectively, when Sapp stops cheating he will be legit too
stops cheating? meaning roids?
Tom Stall 02-19-2007, 06:11 AM choi is sloppy but his big ass can take a punch.
