Has anyone ever seen the grappling match where royce was choked unconcious by wallid ismail ? If so, what exactly happend?

yeah it was somewhere from pride 12 to 16, it was before ryan fought saku with that shoulder injury that he made some comments, does anybody know what happend in that street fight? and is there any video of that? and one other thing, have royce and wallid ever grappled besides that one time?

Royce and wallid only grappled that one time, but Wallid has fought other Gracies before. In fact Wallid was called the Gracie Killer (before Saku was Gracie hunter) becuase he'd beaten a couple other Gracies (in jiujitsu) - Rorion was one and the other was a less known one i think.

Royce got exposed for being incredibly overrated. I never liked Royce. He was known for beating absolute amateurs at fighting, or guys who didnt know what a submission was.

If you watch Royce's documentary there is a good reason for each time he holds a submission a few seconds after the referee stoppage. There is no way that guy is overrated either, he changed the sport of MMA.

I know everyone gets all emotional about him but Royce didnt really fight anyone and each time he did he got worked.... sure he is a pioneer and all that in no way am i bashing him at all but the same could be said about rickson.

He is a pioneer but as far as being the best Jit Jitsu guy like many still believe well that's just false.

Yeah he got powned. He is a great skilled fighter but I agree that he is a little bit arrogant. For example the fight with Hughes he said that the UFCwas the House he built and that he would choke out Matt and help him up and send him home. The Gracies need to understand that their game has changed, it has evolved and it's no longer just a ground game. I think the only one who has caught on to this idea is Rickson but all of the other Gracies are still set in their old ways. Which is sad because they took judo and transformed it to what is today known as Gracie Brazilian Jiu Jitsu so for them to be stuck in their original ways is sad since they did change a way of fighting to adapt to them they need to do the same to fight these new breed of fighters.

hes nto the best jui-jitsu guy, but he can use it in mma pretty effectively. THink about it, he has NOTHING but jui-jitsu, yet he still manages to do allright. Wallid may be better in sport jui-jitsu, but Gracie is better with mma jui-jitsu.

Why are people dissing Royce in this thread? Hes like the father of MMA, you dont compare basketball players who used to shoot underhand in the 50s with guys today. Who cares if his jujutsu wasnt the best ever, he could do stuff better jujutsu guys couldnt like slip a punch. He hung with Sakuraba for 90 minutes, beat Yoshida, he performed better in MMA than any of his relatives who had so called better jujutsu, he beat Shamrock who was a beast in Pancrase who plowed through everyone and he beat guys like Dan Severn who were wrestling pros and outweighed him by a ton. He got beat by the most dominant champion in one of the most competitive divisions of MMA during a time when the level of competition has risen 500% from when he was fighting, big fuckin deal.

Dont be an asshole hater like spandex wearing gum/cum chewing Marc Liamon. Show respect to the man who brought us the sport we love and continues to fight with the heart of a lion. Who cares if hes proud, look at how some of these fan favorites talk trash constantly. You don't see Royce insulting peoples countries or their abilities, you only see him say good things about other fighters.

Wallid does not suck, he is a multi time Brazilian bjj and World bjj champion. He started Jungle fight where guys like Werdum and Machida began their mma career and is involved in helping many other Brazilians begin mma like Jacare, and like it or not, he would beat Royce again in a sub grappling match with gi's.
