NFL personnel people are busy readying for the open of the free-agency period at the end of the month.

They have already done the in-house evaluations of their rosters, which means it's time to start looking around at the other 31 teams for players who can help.

Asante Samuel, can you smell the cash? (Getty Images)
There are so many teams that have an abundance of cap room -- 18 are expected to have $20 million or more -- it could mean a lot of funny money being thrown around. The cap is expected to be in the $116 million range, which means a lot of teams will come out firing.

In other words, great players will get paid a ton, good players too much and so-so players way too much.

Once again, look for name players to be the guys the fans want to sign quickly. That is a mistake.

We don't fall into that trap here. When I put together my list of the top 32 free agents, it is done with an eye on the future, not on the past.

That's why you might think the list that follows is a bit different than the norm. Two other things about my list: It doesn't include any players we expect to be hit with the franchise tag and it doesn't include restricted free agents.

In the franchise category, that leaves off players like Oakland corner Nnamdi Asomugha, Kansas City defensive end Jared Allen, Carolina tackle Jordan Gross, Baltimore defensive end Terrell Suggs, Seattle corner Marcus Trufant, Tennessee defensive tackle Albert Haynesworth, Arizona linebacker Karlos Dansby and Philadelphia tight end L.J. Smith (already tagged).

Those players can still move, but the tag basically makes it almost impossible, the compensation far too great to prevent a team from signing them.

So they're all off the list.

Age is also a consideration. I'm not big on putting guys over 30 on my list, although there are exceptions.

You might notice me leaning toward young, rising players. Those are the players I would look to sign. That's why a player like Tennessee Titans defensive end Antwan Odom is ranked at No. 2. He is just touching the surface of his ability.

There are other young players who might be higher on this list than others. It's looking to the future, not the past. That's the key to any free-agency class.

1. Asante Samuel, CB, New England Patriots: He is a premier corner who is coming off an All-Pro season. He will get the biggest contract on the market.

2. Antwan Odom, DE, Tennessee Titans: In a league starved for pass rushers, here's a 26-year old coming off an eight-sack season. The Titans will be hard-pressed to keep him considering they will have to franchise Haynesworth.

3. Randy Moss, WR, New England Patriots: I love the way he plays. But he turns 31 this week and one has to wonder how he'll be as a player in another system, without the peer pressure to toe the line. The Pats might still franchise him, but that's not a definite.

Lance Briggs (Getty Images)
4. Corey Williams, DT, Green Bay Packers: This 27-year-old is one of the better young players available. At 312 pounds, he can hold up against the run, and he has 14 sacks over the past two seasons.

5. Lance Briggs, LB, Chicago Bears: The Bears would love to keep him but they can't franchise him, so he will hit the market. He's coming off a heck of a season and should cash in on it.

6. Flozell Adams, T, Dallas Cowboys: After a so-so year in 2006, he played well last season. Was it a money push? The Cowboys would love to have him back, but only at the right price.

7. Justin Smith, DE, Cincinnati Bengals: He had only two sacks last season, which hurts his marketability. But he's a better player than that. In a league looking for pass rushers, he will get overpaid some.

8. Alan Faneca, G, Pittsburgh Steelers: If he were four years younger, he'd be even higher. He played at a really high level last season after a so-so 2006. But at 31, how much more does he have left?

9. Bernard Berrian, WR, Chicago Bears: He had a little case of the drops last season, but his deep speed is enticing. He's the next-best deep threat on the market after Moss.

Michael Turner (Getty Images)
10. Michael Turner, RB, San Diego Chargers: I'm not big on paying running backs who played with other teams, but he will get his money. He'll give his new team two or three good years. There's already wear and tear on the tires.

11. Jacob Bell, G, Tennessee Titans: He has developed into a power player for the Titans. He is part of a good offensive line that doesn't get the attention it deserves. He has 31 starts the past two seasons.

12. Gibril Wilson, S, New York Giants: He is coming off a good playoff run that probably upped his value. He led the Giants in tackles in two playoff games. He is a physical safety with range.

13. Ken Hamlin, S, Dallas Cowboys: The Cowboys signed him to a one-year deal and he responded with a Pro Bowl season. That's cashing in. He is a big hitter who played better against the pass last season than he did when he was with Seattle.

14. Ryan Lilja, G, Indianapolis Colts: He has developed into a good player the past two years and he is a big reason the Colts' running game has improved. The way guards got paid last year, he will get his this time around.

15. Bryant Johnson, WR, Arizona Cardinals: He is the third receiver in Arizona, so bringing him back is a luxury. The Cardinals want to keep him but it might be tough. He has good speed. He caught 46 passes and made eight starts last season.

16. Drayton Florence, CB, San Diego Chargers: He lost his starting job to Antonio Cromartie, but played well as a nickel corner after that. With teams searching for corners to match up against the spread offenses, he should be a wanted commodity.

17. D.J. Hackett, WR, Seattle Seahawks: He played in only six games due to injury, but he is 26 and was being counted on as a big part of the Seattle offense. In one three-game span in November, he had 23 catches for 294 yards and three scores.

18. Calvin Pace, LB, Arizona Cardinals: The former defensive end moved to linebacker and responded with a 6½-sack season. He also showed he has the foot speed to play the position.

19. Tommy Kelly, DT, Oakland Raiders: Before tearing an ACL, he was a quality starter for the Raiders, a player on the upswing. If he can show that the knee is rehabbing right, he will get a nice deal. The team that signs him will be getting a good defensive lineman.

20. Travis LaBoy, DE, Tennessee Titans: He was used mostly as a speed rusher and had six sacks. Injuries have held him back, but he's only 26. He plays with a lot of effort.

Jerry Porter (Getty Images)
21. Jerry Porter, WR, Oakland Raiders: He had 44 catches last season in a bad offense, but averaged 16 yards per catch. At 29, he still has some good football left. He will be free when the period opens after opting out of his contract.

22. Rex Grossman, QB, Chicago Bears: In a quarterback-famished league, he's bound to get some action. Grossman did lead a team to the Super Bowl two years ago. Maybe a new team will be good for him.

23. Jamal Lewis, RB, Cleveland Browns: He signed a one-year deal with the Browns and surprised a lot of people -- me included -- with a big season. But can he expect a long-term deal after eight years as an NFL running back? For a season or two, he could be a bargain.

24. Kawika Mitchell, LB, New York Giants: He's another player who took a one-year deal and will now cash in. Mitchell exceeded a lot of expectations for the Giants

25. Eugene Wilson, S, New England Patriots: He has started 55 games the past five seasons, playing both corner and safety. He started six games last season and has range for a team looking for a free safety.

26. Stacy Andrews, T-G, Cincinnati Bengals: He can play both guard and tackle and filled in nicely last year when injuries hit Willie Anderson. Andrews moved to right tackle and played well.

Julius Jones (Getty Images)
27. Julius Jones, RB, Dallas Cowboys: He lost his starting job by season's end to Marion Barber. The Cowboys will let Jones walk. Can he be a decent starter? Yes. But if he's asking for mega-money he might be in for a shock.

28. Josh Brown, K, Seattle Seahawks: Brown made 28 of 34 field-goal attempts, his misses all coming from outside 40 yards, two from outside 50. I don't normally put kickers on the list, but he's worth a look.

29. Sean Locklear, RT, Seattle Seahawks: He has 42 starts the past three seasons at right tackle. In a league where there aren't a lot of them, he has some value. He's another 26-year-old player.

30. Maurice Williams, T-G, Jacksonville Jaguars: He was benched as the team's right tackle this season when the Jags signed Tony Pashos, but Williams played well when he started the final two months at guard. He can play both positions, which will help his value.

31. Max Starks, T, Pittsburgh Steelers: He was a starter at right tackle in the Super Bowl season of 2005 and in 2006, but lost his job this season in camp. When injuries hit, he moved to left tackle and played well. He's a huge man at 6-8 and 335 pounds. He did end the season on IR with a knee injury, but it isn't serious.

32. Jake Scott, G, Indianapolis Colts: He has started 48 games the past three seasons for a good offense. And he's only 26. At 290 pounds, he's not big enough to play in all systems.

You're likely correct.

It seems as if the Pats would of given him an offer last year if they were interested, but they didn't at all. If he did leave, would you expect Watkins to be a solid starter or do you think you would have to get another starting caliber free safety?

if ken leaves we are in major trouble. i think watkins could be a servicable safety but that's about it. we still have fatboy williams at ss. so if fatboy(roy) doesn't get back to normal next season he's gone. i bet we resign hamlin and if fatboy doesn't perform we get either A a new ss or B move the hammer to ss and get a new fs.

Yeah, Roy looked like a joke this season.

I've always HATED Oklahoma, but he was one of the few guys I always loved. His mentality was to smash people, whether they had the ball or not. He was also serviceable in coverage. This year he looked lost in coverage and I saw him get run over multiple times; something I didn't think I would see until he was 35.

Looked like lack of heart, which I am surprised to say.

The Atlanta Falcons continued their franchise makeover in earnest on Friday, releasing tight end Alge Crumpler, quarterback Byron Leftwich, offensive tackle Wayne Gandy and four other players.

The team also announced it had released cornerback Lewis Sanders, wide receiver Jamin Elliott, linebacker Marcus Wilkins and defensive tackle Rod Coleman.

"This is a difficult day for the entire organization," Falcons GM Thomas Dimitroff said in a statement. "A number of these players have contributed to this organization on and off the field at a high level and we greatly appreciate their efforts. These decisions weren't easy, but we felt they were necessary to build a team in the long-term best interest of the Falcons and its fans."

Crumpler, who just completed his seventh season, all with Atlanta, has 316 career catches for 4,212 yards and 35 touchdowns. He had been with the team since 2001 and was selected to five Pro Bowls.

Leftwich, formerly a starter for the Jacksonville Jaguars, was acquired by the Falcons during the season after the Jaguars released him in order to go with David Garrard. He alternated with Joey Harrington as the Falcons' starter last season.

"As a football coach it is never easy to cut any player, especially veteran players who have been valuable members of the organization," said new coach Mike Smith, who was hired last month.

From all indications, the shake-up isn't done. Veterans such as Warrick Dunn and Lawyer Milloy could become victims of the cap, though they weren't included in the original round of cuts.

Dimitroff wants to provide flexibility in the free-agent market, which begins Feb. 29.

Henry's $6 million option bonus is due Feb. 29, Walker's $5.4 million bonus is due March 4, and Gold's $500,000 bonus is due March 3. Meanwhile, John Lynch's retirement decision should be made by March 4, when he is due a $1.12 million bonus.

LOL noone in their right mind would give up anything significant for those fools.

Gold is good but overpaid and undersized. Henry has drug issues and was almost suspended last year. Walker has been injury prone and now fought his way out of two consecutive NFL teams (Broncos, Packers).

I'd pass on all three. The most attractive though is Gold. Walker is a guy that cares more about his stats than wins or losses and Travis Henry has never struck me as a guy that would fit in well with the Patriots due to character issues. I've always been a fan of Alge Crumpler but the Patriots really have no use for him especially with their money being thrown to Moss and Samuel this offseason.

Feb. 16, 2008

We’re told the Bengals may elect to give DE Justin Smith the franchise tag for the second consecutive year. However, if they do, Smith’s salary-cap number for 2008 would be in excess of $10 million, and that could hamstring Cincinnati’s attempts to bring back other members of one of the Bengals’ most talented groups of free agents in years — a group that includes S Madieu Williams, OLB Landon Johnson and OG-OT Stacy Andrews, among others.

The way we hear it, don’t rule out the possibility of the Bengals re-signing unrestricted free-agent S Madieu Williams, even with young safeties Marvin White and Chinedum Ndukwe having staked their claims for more playing time in 2008.

Word from Baltimore is that the Ravens are hopeful they will receive a compensatory third-round selection after losing versatile OLB Adalius Thomas to the Patriots in free agency last offseason.

The Browns’ aggressiveness at the outset of free agency may be tied to the availability of the top free-agent defensive linemen. It’s no secret Cleveland wants to bolster its D-line, but the feeling is some of the top linemen available — with Titans DT Albert Haynesworth being the prime example — will be slapped with the franchise tag.

The Dolphins’ release of MLB Zach Thomas came as only a mild surprise to those close to the situation. A veteran of 12 seasons, he’s not the player he once was, as injuries and age have limited his impact. Furthermore, he doesn’t fit the mold of the massive, hulking inside linebacker that executive vice president of football operations Bill Parcells prefers. However, the prevailing thought had been that Parcells would want to keep Thomas around for stability and leadership purposes but would ask him to agree to a lesser contract.

What had been rumored around Orchard Park all season became official on Thursday. WR Peerless Price will not be a Bill in 2008. Price was one of the few Bills who had failed to fulfill expectations under Dick Jauron, and he was seen as dead weight. Wide receiver is undoubtedly the team’s biggest need, both before and after Price’s release.

Don’t expect the Patriots to pick up the $4 million option they have on WR Kelley Washington. In his first year as a Patriot, the former Bengal failed to catch a pass, as he was buried on the Patriots’ depth chart. However, the Pats value his tremendous special-teams contributions and would be happy to keep him on board if he’s willing to accept a reduced salary.

Look for Jets WR Justin McCareins to be earning his paycheck outside New York in 2008. Even with the contractual stalemate between fellow WR Laveranues Coles and Jets management, McCareins — who had been rumored to be on the trading blocks all season — doesn’t fit into the team’s plans. The team is excited about the potential of WR Brad Smith, a converted quarterback who has game-breaking ability.

Three of the Colts’ most prominent players may not be available for the start of training camp in late July. DE Dwight Freeney (foot), WR Marvin Harrison (knee) and S Bob Sanders (shoulder) could all be sidelined through the summer. On the plus side, team president Bill Polian says that none of them is expected to be out for the start of the regular season.

While the Titans want to sign PK Rob Bironas to a contract extension, they also realize there is no rush to do so, the way we hear it. Bironas, a restricted free agent, will likely receive one of the highest tenders from the Titans if they don’t sign him to an extension, and that probably will ward off any potential suitors for the 2007 Golden Toe winner.

Team insiders say that an infusion of youth is needed in the Chiefs’ CB corps. For as great as his career as a whole has been, 34-year-old Ty Law no longer has the speed to be considered an elite player. Once boasting the physicality and recovery speed to be a premier bump-and-run corner, Law now cheats further off the line to help mask his diminishing ability. Fellow starting CB Patrick Surtain will be 32 by the time training camp opens and also has seen a regression in ability.

Sources tell us it’s only a matter of time before FS Marlon McCree is officially booted off the Chargers. He was a liability in coverage and also showed poor tackling ability in 2007. Making the move easier and all the more prudent is the Chargers’ belief that they have a budding star in versatile DB Eric Weddle. The team traded up in the second round in the ’07 draft to nab him, and he showed great promise in sub packages in his rookie season.

We hear one of the last remaining Broncos from the John Elway era could be on his way out of Denver. WR Rod Smith, who’ll be 38 in May, has been placed on the reserve/retired list, though he has not made anything official and still has hopes that he will play again. Smith missed all of last season with an injured left hip.

The Cowboys would be willing to franchise FS Ken Hamlin if it means keeping him. They would like to reach a long-term accord with Hamlin, who was mostly very good last season and earned a Pro Bowl invite. However, if they can’t reach an agreement, the Cowboys are not afraid to slap the tag on him and guarantee another year with him heading up the secondary.

<UL>Safety might be one of the few positions the Giants overhaul this offseason. They’d like to re-sign FS Gibril Wilson, an unrestricted free agent, but the SS spot might look different. James Butler was functional and rookie Michael Johnson showed some upside, but the team might go for a veteran option, which could leave

Report: Patriots offer Thomas contract

6:22 PM Mon, Feb 18, 2008 | Permalink
Albert Breer

According to the NFL Network's Adam Schefter, the Patriots have offered veteran LB Zach Thomas a contract, which would presumably mean that he's passed a physical in New England.

Today's visit in Foxboro, Mass. was the first on Thomas' tour. The Cowboys have shown an interest in Thomas, and head coach Wade Phillips has shown his affection for the ex-Texas Tech star in the past.

The question now is whether Thomas makes it out of the Boston area as a free agent. Schefter has him visiting New Orleans tomorrow, and the Cowboys were slated to visit with him after the combine.

Considering that Thomas did extensive work in researching all these teams, it would seem he may take some time to make a decision. But that all could depend on how convincing the Patriots are. If he did indeed pass a physical, that is certainly significant, given the concussion issues he grappled with during 2007.

The Bucs and Broncos are in trade discussions involving Javon Walker, according to the St. Petersburg Times.

The sides have done business in the past, but it'd be a surprise if a deal actually happens. Walker is almost certain to be cut before his $5.4 million option bonus comes due March 4. If healthy, he'd be an excellent fit in Jon Gruden's West Coast attack, but his balky knee makes Walker a huge risk.

SAMUEL SET TO JOIN THE FLOCK
Various media reports, collected and referenced by our good friends at SportingNews.com, indicate that cornerback Asante Samuel will indeed sign a contract with the Eagles on Friday.
It's reportedly a five-year, $47.2 million deal. To the casual fan, that's short of the $10 million per year average from the eight-year, $80 million deal signed last year by Nate Clements of the 49ers. As everyone in PFT Planet knows, the Clements deal is actually seven years and $64 million, making it worth a hair over $9 million per year.
Samuel's deal carries an average of nearly $9.5 million. They could have added a phony final year that would have pushed the average to $10 million per year or more, and we respect both sides for doing what looks to be a "real" deal.
Also, there's a certain irony regarding the five-year duration of the contract. Typically, the Eagles like to lock players up for looooong periods of time. As it now stands, Samuel's deal will expire before the contracts signed by some of the young players who cashed in early.

It has been well publicized that Lito Shepherd will be gone. They were even trying to trade him for Larry Fitzgerald, but he will likely be shipped for below market value.

Shaun Rogers is heading to Cincy from Detroit. That is a tough move for Lions.

I have heard nothing solid about Randy Moss, except that some rumors about returning to the Patriots for 3 years and $30 million. Seems kind of high priced, but we'll see. I just want him back.

Also, your Cowboys might be in the running for Javon Walker. Walker's former position coach in Green Bay, Ray Sherman, serves in that same capacity for the Cowboys. Sherman has a close relationship with Walker, and he was one of the people who consoled him when Broncos cornerback Darrient Williams died in his arms following a shooting in downtown Denver.

Years past, Sherman has certainly had influence on Cowboy's personnel moves. He gives him a lot of credit for T.O.'s success this past season.

Cowboys also appear to have interest in RB Tatum Bell, a definite speed guy.

It'll include a whopping $16 million signing bonus. Glazer says the Giants were unwilling to match the offer, which is almost a given. Word around the NFL is that Al Davis is overpaying because nobody wants to go to Oakland.

Yep, I had seen that as well. Thanks though... I am getting nervous, but I have the utmost confidence in our front office (unlike just about every other teams')

I hope I am not eating these words later, but I hope, just hope, that Moss is just trying to see how valuable the Patriots view him, and he will be back.

I also did some research and saw that that situation with that woman near the end of the season has escalated to a level where the lady says she will reveal lots of dirt about Randy if he doesn't pay her $500,000. Moss claimed it was all an accident and the lady was just trying to get rich quick.

The Patriots and Randy Moss aren't close to a deal and Moss is starting to listen to offers from other teams.

Moss, who wasn't franchised by the Patriots, became a free agent after midnight Thursday. Though talks continue with the Patriots, the numbers aren't close enough for him to close his ears to other opportunities,

To facilitate a trade for the Patriots last spring, Moss took a $7 million paycut -- from $10 million to $3 million-- but shortened his contract to one year. The Patriots had the option of franchising him but decided to work out a contract with him.

As a free agent, Moss is available to the highest bidder. He would like to stay in New England and with Tom Brady, but he could be available for the right offer. It is not known how many teams and which teams contacted him.

He is waiting to see if someone offers him a deal he can't refuse.
Apparently the Patriots deal isn't quite irresistible.

As for the Cowboys front office, they are pretty solid... but I feel like they make some moves on a whim. They haven't had the stability for the past few years, but their goals are obviously well intended (winning).
The Patriots front office is among the most precise in the history of North American sport. They place a value on players and whether or not they can technically "afford" someone is not an issue, whether he is worth it is.

The fact is, the reason the Patriots have been so successful for the past 7 years (no ridiculous contracts) could be the reason that Randy doesn't return next year. That said, looking at it objectively, we had to choose either Randy or Asante, and I am assuming we chose Randy.

The Vikings signed Bernard Berrian to an undisclosed six-year contract.
Berrian could be overmatched if expected to be a true "number one" receiver, but he adds production and talent to a woeful passing game. Tarvaris Jackson now has two burners in Berrian and Sidney Rice, with Bobby Wade still likely to be active underneath. Expect Berrian's numbers to take a slight hit in Minnesota, where Jackson is still a major question mark.

If Moss turned down the 3 year 30 million he can take a hike because that means his "team first" act this past season was a one year thing so he could pick up another huge pay day. I'll lose all respect for him if he goes to the highest bidder while still turning down a fair contract with the Pats. Scott Pioli and Bill Belichick will have a plan B though. If Moss leaves we have 22 million to pick up other assets but Tommy Brady certainly won't be pleased.

Boston Herald Blog: Where might Randy go?
Where might Randy go?

The rumors continue to fly about Randy Moss. The latest comes from NFL.com, where Adam Schefter reports that Moss might be tempted to join Brett Favre in Green Bay, in part because he’s frustrated with the lack of movement by the Patriots and determined not to take another discount to play here.

While we’re on record in the belief that Moss is best served by staying in New England, if the money doesn’t work, the money doesn’t work. So where might he go? Unless Moss is a complete charlatan, it seems safe to assume that he’s only interested in playing for a winner at this stage of his career. That’s certainly what he led everyone to believe last season with the Pats.

And judging from his extreme frustrations in Oakland, he’s probably not going anywhere with a lousy quarterback, no matter how much money is thrown at him. When you take these two factors — a winner with a quarterback — it’s amazing how many teams are eliminated. By this criteria, here are the teams that might interest Moss.

1. DALLAS COWBOYS: Owner Jerry Jones is flush with cash, so that’s not an issue. And if he’s serious about making 2010 an uncapped year, he could backload a Moss contract to balloon post-cap. Tony Romo is a Pro Bowl quarterback, so that would work, too. Don’t be surprised if Dallas puts on the full court press. Jones is already on record that he wants to make a splash this offseason, and the Cowboys thus far have been surprisingly quiet, beyond re-signing Flozell Adams.

2. GREEN BAY PACKERS: The Packers should have faced the Patriots in Super Bowl XLII, but they couldn’t seal the deal at home against the Giants in overtime. Quarterback Brett Favre is supposedly mulling retirement, but as Schefter notes, nothing would energize him like the presence of Moss, whom he campaigned for last winter.

3. INDIANAPOLIS COLTS: We probably should have added a third criterion — salary cap space and the willingness to spend it. The Colts simply do not venture into the free agent market. They prefer instead to pay the players they draft. That said, Peyton Manning and the AFC’s other titan alongside the Patriots certainly qualify as winners.

4. PITTSBURGH STEELERS: Big Ben Roethlisberger has already won a Super Bowl and last year made the leap from game manager to game changer. The Steelers are a defending playoff team.

5. NEW YORK GIANTS: Moss needs no reminder of the Giants’ ability to win. And while Eli Manning may not yet be an elite QB, he’s got great bloodlines and many expect him to blossom after what he did in Super Bowl XLII. That said, caveat emptor — Manning ranked 25th in quarterback rating last season.

5. NEW ORLEANS SAINTS: They’re coming off a down season, but with Drew Brees, Reggie Bush and Marques Colston, the Saints are an excellent candidate to bounce back, especially in the weak NFC South.

A look around the league shows good quarterbacks on bad teams (Carson Palmer, Cincinnati) and good teams with mediocre quarterbacks (Vince Young, Tennessee). It’s hard to imagine Moss putting himself in such a position. Only time will tell.

According to the Mort Report, Moss feels like he is being low-balled by the Patriots, who have reportedly offered him a contract with only $13 million guaranteed. He wants to return, but doesn't want to give them more than a million dollar discount per season.

Eagles and Cowboys are other interested teams.

Report: Moss deal close

6:04 PM Sun, Mar 02, 2008 | Permalink
Albert Breer

The Patriots and WR Randy Moss are close to an agreement on a multi-year contract to keep the All-Pro in New England.

All along, it has seemed unlikely that Moss would leave the Patriots and, if they hammer this one out, then he'd stay without visiting any other teams. I know we've had rumor after rumor after rumor floating around, and I'd caution anyone against getting too caught up in those.

If this is indeed a done deal, then the search for a "Wow Factor" on offense will be left with dwindling options. The only bona fide top-shelf receiver left on the market, outside of Moss, is Javon Walker, who carries injury concern with him. The running back market, which wasn't exactly lush to begin with, lost its only potential "Wow" guy today, when Michael Turner wrapped up his contract with the Falcons.

Hey, there's always the draft .... Which I know you guys are very well aware of.

The Cardinals used their franchise tag on free-agent-to-be Karlos Dansby on Thursday, all but assuring he will remain a Cardinal in 2008.

In a move long expected, the Cardinals placed their franchise tag on linebacker Karlos Dansby Thursday, the first time the team has used the tag since 2002.

Dansby gets the “non-exclusive” tag, meaning he can still negotiate with other teams as a free agent and sign an offer sheet if he chooses. If that happens, the Cardinals can either match the offer or the team must give the Cards two first-round draft picks.

INDIANAPOLIS – Whether the Cardinals can get a restructured contract done with wide receiver Larry Fitzgerald by the time free agency begins remains unresolved – the two sides seem to be set in their positions right now – but Fitzgerald’s status is not.

Fitzgerald will be a Cardinal in 2008. He won’t be traded. And while the Cards desperately want to lower his bulging salary cap number that is more than $16 million, they’ll live with it if they must.

“If we can’t (reach a deal), we will move forward with that number,” general manager Rod Graves said while addressing the national media Saturday at the scouting combine. “Larry is a core player. We are going to do what we have to do to keep that core in place.”

Asked if it was possible to keep both Fitzgerald and fellow Pro Bowl receiver Anquan Boldin long-term, Graves said “it is certainly our intention to keep both players.”

I'd love to have both Fitz and Boldin but if i had to choose i'd go with Larry.
