View Full Version : Your top 10 HW list?
Beanflicker 02-09-2008, 07:25 PM Talkin about Ali vs Louis in the other thread, I got to wondering who you guys have in your top 10 HWs of all time list? Judged over the whole career, so no "Mike Tyson circa 85-89" allowed. All subjective obviously
1. Muhammad Ali
2. Larry Holmes
3. Joe Louis
4. George Foreman
5. Rocky Marciano
6. Jack Dempsey
7. Lennox Lewis (might be unpopular but I believe lewis is top 10)
8. Sonny Liston
9. Joe Frazier
10. Gene Tunney
Top 5 Hardest Punchers
1. Earnie Shavers
2. George Foreman
3. Mike Tyson
4. Sonny Liston
5. Lennox Lewis
Top 5 Best Chins
1. George Chuvalo
2. Randall Cobb
3. Oliver McCall
4. Ray Mercer
5. Jerry Quarry
So this list is being based on overall career achievments and not who beats who at their peak.
1.Ali
2.Holmes
3.Louis
4.Foreman
5.Liston
6.Lewis
7.Holyfield
8.Tyson
9.Marciano
10.Johnson
I think Ali deserves to be in the top 5 best chins also.He took the best Foreman,Liston,Frazier and Shavers could throw without tasting the canvas.
VENDO 02-09-2008, 08:51 PM why the hell do you guys have sonny liston in your top 10's???
blevunly 02-09-2008, 08:52 PM 1.Ali

8.Johnson
9.Dempsey
10.Patterson

Sonny Liston was awesome in his heyday. He genuinely intimidated his op and he cleaned the division out in impressive fashion b4 annihilating Floyd for the title.
Had Ali not been around he may well have dominated for much longer.
Plus he could really crack hard and he even floored opponents with his jab.

I think Ali definatly had a great chin, but I think there is a difference between Ali and a guy like Chuvalo, who seemed to just have a chunk of rock as a head (and was never dropped, despite being hit by some of the hardest punchers in boxing history).

Well said. Definatly a shame hes famous for the Ali fights instead of the terror he brought down on the HW division before that.
Two first round KOs of Floyd Patterson, thats insane. Patterson was a great fighter.
Beanflicker 02-09-2008, 09:14 PM BTW Its awesome to see guys ranking Holmes so high. I think he's terribly underrated, most people have him from 7-10, and there are people who dont even consider him top 10.
VENDO 02-09-2008, 09:31 PM sonny liston beat one HOFer, and everyone already knew he was gonna beat floyd.
Sonny is another tyson.
his wins over machen, and folley were great, but not top 5.
his wars with cleveland williams was great as well.
if you have sonny in your top 5, than tyson mine as well be too.
Sonny isn't even top 10, prolly not even top 20.
he was a wasted potential.
he could've done so much better.

48-0 and 7 yrs as champion till the Spinks fight. His jab was also arguably the best too.
Larry was another to suffer the Marciano jinx.

True, can't expect to follow a legend.
Beanflicker 02-09-2008, 10:58 PM I agree that Liston probably doesn't deserve top 5, but I think he deserves a place in the top 10. I don't understand how he was wasted potential or could have been much better, he was what he was: a big strong guy with serious skills and murderous punching power. I gave him #8 on my list.
Beanflicker 02-09-2008, 10:59 PM BTW, I would pick Sonny Liston to beat Marciano, Dempsey and I'd give him a good chance against Lennox, Foreman and Louis

Yeah no doubt.
but in order to crack top ten, you have to have alot more accomplishments than sonny.
My boxing forum has evolved from lists including Roy Jones Jnr and Mike Tyson to this

Mine included Mike Tyson, but I was going off of achievments like Jim said. Being the youngest Heavyweight Champion has to count for something.
thats cool but you didnt have him #1 with Roy Jones #2 and Ali not even making the top 20
We did this thread ages ago it was hilarious

Man, that would be horrible.
I still haven't seen Jones vs Ruiz, which if I'm not mistaken is his only heavyweight fight.

would'nt floyd patterson be in there as well then?
I love tyson, but he had to do alot more to be in the top ten.
tyson was awesome though.

Yep, Patterson is my number 10 Mike beat him by over a year and did it in a more dominating fashion.

2 Louis
3.Holmes.
4 Foreman
5 Lewis
6 Marciano
7 Frazier
8 Dempsey
9 Holyfield
10 Bowe or Tyson
my top 5 was easy for me to pick the rest took me like 5 minutes and a beer to ponder
Imo Tyson, Holyfield and Bowe would have killed Dempsey but im not changing it now its to much work
VENDO 02-22-2008, 06:40 AM I think alot of people would beat dempsey as well.
Beanflicker 02-22-2008, 06:33 PM Yeah I mean Marciano and Dempsey probably would fight Cruiserweight or possibly LHW today, I know they were great fighters but its hard to believe a small guy like that could beat a guy like Tyson, Foreman or Lewis.
BTW I would pick today's Wlad klitchsko to beat a lot of guys on my list.
