View Full Version : Do you consider grappling/bjj "fighting"
uGotKTFO 01-18-2008, 09:08 PM This thread is going on another forum, wondered what you guys thought.
Do you consider a grappling/BJJ/wrestling/judo competition to be fighting? If you participate in some sort of grappling event, would you consider yourself a fighter?
To me, if there's no strikes, it's not a fight. Just a match/competition.
Muay Thai, Boxing, Kickboxing, Shootboxing, MMA = fight
BJJ, Judo, Submission Grappling, Wrestling = match.
Judo/BJJ guys are commonly referred to as "players", but Muay Thai/MMA guys are referred to as "fighters".
To me it's simple, but (going by the other thread) apparently a lot of people refer to their BJJ matches as fights, and think they are a fighter because they've been in some form of grappling tournament. Are they just losers trying to make them selves feel tough or are they correct?
What do you think?
SD_ATOmega119 01-18-2008, 09:32 PM i call it a match and when i have a comp i say i have a match or i have to wrestle so and so...
but i hitnk upper level bjj and sub wrestling can be called a fight bc that shit gets dirty and u jsut try to kill the other guy just without punching him in the head
Obi Narb Kenobi 01-18-2008, 10:01 PM i call wrestling competition matches and bjj/sub wrestling fights
i don't buy into the "if there are no strikes it is not a fight thing" if anything ground fighting is more of a "fight" than a boxing/mauy thai/ kick boxing match since something like 80% of fights go to the ground
Squirrel 01-18-2008, 10:04 PM If both people hate each other and are trying to inflict bodily harm then yes it's a fight.
Resin 01-18-2008, 10:04 PM i always heard ppl say fight when they referred to a grappling match.
VENDO 01-18-2008, 10:38 PM Wrestling, Grappling=Match.
Anything that allows punching to the head=fight.

imo only thing that can consider ypu a fighter is MMA
a boxing competition makes you a boxer

I agree to an extent.
But MMA is a Sport too.
Some people consider them Mixed martial artists.
I used to be all "WTF!?" when I would hear my BJJ coach talk about this guy fought this guy and this guy will fight this guy next week, etc. Until I figured out what he meant by "fight" I understood as "have a match with". Just different verbiage for different people. I'm more comfortable with match than fight for non striking arts.

That's so when you lose you can say you lost a "match" and not that you lost a "fight". :sifone:
If it was a fight I would be like Jeremy Horn with over 100 fights.

i agree but boxing and kick boxing is no more of a fight either
if i wrestled 3 matches and had 5 BJJ matches and win them all i am not 8-0 in fighting but at the same time if i have 5 boxing matches i am not 5-0 in fighting
the fight game is divided into two aspects why would doing one half (striking) be more of a fight than grappling?
ninjashoes 01-19-2008, 11:31 PM people usually dont consider grappling a fight because in most matches there is not serious harm where as in most boxing/kickboxing matches there is almost always at least bruising
imo you have to have more balls to get punched in the face, I know this because I would much rather grapple with someone than box them but maybe that is because I am a grappler
VENDO 01-20-2008, 12:19 AM LOL at narb.
You get punched in the face over, and over, and makes your brain shake more than any other sport.
Boxing can cause you to go brain dead, and possibly die in a ring, and everytime you step into the ropes, it can be your last, and it is like 20x more dangerous than Kickboxing, grappling, and MMA. Yet its nor more than a fight than grappling???
That's weird.
Sometimes people call boxing fighting, and vise versa.
That's fine, I don't hang on the lingo to much..
but when people call wrestling, or grappling a fight..I think it kinda sounds poserish and retarded.
jukeboxhero 01-20-2008, 02:34 AM Fighting to me is a no rules, anything goes brawl. I think Vale Tudo/MMA is the closest of any sports that can be considered a fight. Grappling is only a part of fighting. By itself is not a fight.
Nasty Nate 01-20-2008, 03:06 AM sparring and grappling for practice/training is not fighting.
grappling/boxing w/e it may be where your holding nothing back is a fight.
The above terms aren't as bad as what I heard once at my gym. A group of new guys came and when it was time to spar (BJJ) they called it "battle".

youve very obviously never had to hop one legged up the stairs for five days because someone cranked on your knee or ankle a bit too hard and too fast, or had figure out a way to use a right handed mouse left handed cause your shoulder got tweaked when someone rolled you over funny. either that or you have never been hit in the face. given the choice between the two, id take the punch in the face all day. that stings for a bit then its over. granted, ive never boxed, but ive been hit in the face plenty. from my own personal experience grappling is much more like a fight than boxing. of course, could just be that im doing something wrong.

not trying to be argumentive, but how is getting punched in the head any different than getting suplexed or judo-tossed on your head? if anything its more dangerous than a punch, because its momentum plus bodyweight at impact. its not as commonly occuring, but much more traumatic.
to me, if your intent is to hurt someone, either with fists or joint locks, malice or no, its a fight.

ok so more dangeroius=a fight?
i went bungy jumping once, can i get a sherdog profile?
ormore damage= a fight?
when i played football in high school i used to get hit pretty darn hard and get injured and my brain rattled so can i be 2-0 in my sherdog fight finder?
or is it dagerous + damage= fight cause i've been at many grappling tournaments and i've seen hundreds of ripped ligaments, knockouts from slams/chokes, and broken bones
i'm not saying either makes you a fighter, i call submission grappling fights cause that's how everyone else refers to them. but trying to say that one sport is more of a fight is not true, but if you want to split hairs, which aspect resembles a fight more?
two guys agreeing to stay at a certain distance from each other and only strike, or two guys allowed to do almost anything in their power to make the guy give up except strike?
IMO neither makes you a real fighter but IF you have to say one i would say grappling
VENDO 01-20-2008, 09:42 PM you grapplers are funny.
bunge jumping is not any type of combat sport, neither is anything you named.
So bad comparison.

LOL, I call werk.
Boxing's extent to knock the guys head off, and make him go unconscious.
Grappling is to make someone submit.

+1.
Grappling is way more dangerous than boxing.
I don't care what the history of boxing is..
The thought of grappling with someone just scares the hell outta me.
Like you, I'd rather get punched in the face than fucking grapple.
Getting punched in the face just stings, it will be over in 5 minutes.
But when you grapple, its a life and death situation..
You will have pain forever.
Shaggydoo 01-20-2008, 10:01 PM I don't think there's a true right answer here. It's one of those points that's going to have different interpretations by most, all of them subjective and/or biased.
Consider it what you will, but in the end it doesn't really matter, now does it?
Here's my opinion though:
Streets = fighting = not good
War = fighting = not good
The rest is SPORT fighting; from organized paintball to MMA and they're all good and honorable. (For the most part.)
VENDO 01-20-2008, 10:03 PM I never really pay to much attention to lingo anyways.
If people call either one a fight, it honestly doesn't bother me.
VENDO 01-20-2008, 10:12 PM No but seriously, who cares.
I hate arguing over the internet.
The only time I argue now, is with that mexican cock lover resin.
Obi Narb Kenobi 01-20-2008, 11:37 PM lol yeah i didn't think this was going to get so big but in the end pure grapplers pwn all pure strikerss
does that have anything to do with this?
no
but war royce gracie!!!!!!!!!!1

Ive been injured while grappling, yes injuries do happen in grappling and they are a pain in the ass but Ive also gone through 20 or so matches in a row without being really hurt in any way, just a little sore and tired with a couple limbs being moderately sore, I have no problem with tapping.
During your average submission even how many guys do you see get fucked up? Now compare that to what goes on in an average Thaiboxing event in Thailand.
I don't think a boxer could go through 20 fights without getting messed up unless he was the best and he knocked everyone else out before they knocked him out. Guys like Mayweather Jr. could do it easily.
Theres a reason why Randy was able to start MMA at a later age its because grappling is way less hard on the body than striking, its just the way it is, it doesent mean boxing is more HARDCORE than grappling, thats just insecurity. You get knocked out and it fucks your brain up from too many concussions. You can heal from a broken limb but a fucked up brain is something that destroys your ability, your confidence and ends your career.
And no you wouldnt rather have someone punch you in the face than grapple lol maybe if its your kid brother punching you in the face. Stings for second then its over? I don't know man if a big dude with punching power hits you in the face its gonna break your jaw, knock your teeth out, give you a concussion, break your orbital bone, pop an eye out, break your nose in 50 places etc etc etc...
I don't think grappling or boxing is anything like a streetfight like I said most streetfights are usually sucker punch knockouts or sloppy shit. The 90% of fights go to the ground crap is pure bullshit, just watch youtube, yeah everyone goes to the ground after they get hit in the head with a bottle and ten guys stomp on them.

That's a good post.
Look at the way Bas Rutten is, He says he has trouble getting up in the morning on Good Day La.
It's all those striking matches he had, he even admits it.
Now, I really don't see Marcelo Garcia having the same problem.
I think it's just terminology.
In the old days a boxing match was a fight. One guy walks away and one guy is helped away by his trainer and friends after being raised off of the floor. There were no round limits or judges. One fight went 122 rounds if I remember right.
But now days two of the top boxers can have a championship match and have a post fight interview looking nearly as fresh as before the "fight". But since historically we've called boxing matches a fight we continue to.
Some seem to be fights while others are mearly boxing matches.
I would pay good money to see Floyd Mayweather Jr. fight Oscar De La Hoya but I would not pay to watch them have another championship boxing match.

how about we make maywather best p4p boxer fight marcelo the best p4p grappler and the winner is called a fighte and the loser is called a loud mouth piece of crap thug with a big mouth named floyd mayweather?
deal?

ask yourself this would you rather piss off marcelo garcia in an alley or floyd mayweather?
personaly i've been knocked out before, i'll take few blows to the head over having every ligament in my knee ripped off from a nasty heel hook, or having to be fed through a straw cause my shoulders were made to go in a loop-di-loop over my head with a kimura, and also marcelo would own floyd in a mixed martial arts fight
Obi Narb Kenobi 01-23-2008, 12:03 PM but seriously lets drop this nothing i say will change your mind that boxing does not make you a fighter anymore than jiu jitsu and nothing you say will ever make me call de la hoya a great fighter

I would ask me this question if this thread would be about fighting in the streets. but it is about grappling and full contact martial arts that allow punches to the head and which one you would call a fight. so i donīt have to ask this question.
and btw i would rather fight marcelo in the streets. i donīt want to bring up a new controversial but i wasnīt to impressed by his ground skills when punches were allowed and i donīt think he is a good streetfighter that can handle shots to the groin, eye gauging, biting etc.
jukeboxhero 01-24-2008, 06:18 AM Most ligament damage can be repaired through surgery, through physical therapy, or through rest. Brain damage is permanent. Well 95% of it anyways.

ligament damage from one traumatic instance is reparable. ligament damage from continual trauma is not. they do get to a point where they just wont stretch back into place anymore. brain damage is no different. getting socked in the head is not a guarantee that one gets brain damage. look at george foreman. some of the hardest hitting boxers of two different eras continuously hit him in the head. hes fine. meldrick taylor took a beating for 12 or 15 rounds and was fucked up forever after it. my point is that someone twisting on your elbow will always fuck it up in the end, there is no guarantee that getting blasted in the head will lead to brain damage.
jukeboxhero 01-26-2008, 07:55 AM You see way more boxers with serious brain damage, than BJJers with traumatic joint injuries. You can also replace ligaments in the body. You cannot replace a brain.
