View Full Version : Ok this is odd but , Should I join Karate?
abbott1 01-17-2008, 04:46 AM I have no idea , this Karate teacher wants sign ups and the place to go is 6:30 3 days every week , but this instructor seems like a fuckin wacko , He says boxing is really effective but there isnt much "tradition in it" , now this is the only thing in town , im a month till im 15 , now... does anyone think i should join or do you think this is a starter for me? o and BTW its for ALL AGES , and im into fighting the most in my town and some people think im "insane" even tho super athletically gifted...
Should I join or does anybody think he will teach me wrong shit???
blevunly 01-17-2008, 04:50 AM Couldn't hurt to try it out.
blevunly 01-17-2008, 04:51 AM btw what style is it?
Chickenjorge 01-17-2008, 04:51 AM wtf?
youre only 14?
thats pretty tight....pretty crazy
abbott1 01-17-2008, 06:31 AM lol , I fell in love with MMA the first day i watched it , because i used to get picked on all the time and 1 time in grade 6 i got in 43 fights , believe me i had a journal from everyday , and every time they made me right down why fighting is bad when i got caught , i liked it because in MMA fighting is legal?! and my mom was scared shitless of me being in jail in grade 6 so , when i wanted to take up wanting to be a fighter , i started working out (other than hockey) and i sort of developed a healthy life style , i dont smoke/drink , i practically breath fighting (sort of hockey also right now) , and my only main goals are ending up in the UFC or the NHL (dont think NHL will happen lol) , and ive only lost 1 fight in grade 4 , when i got picked on..
That's the Reason I made this thread was to know if I should take a shot at this because most likely ill be the oldest person there lol , and/or If it would fuck me up in the head by sating , im better than everyone , cause when you fight cans you get more confident then when you fight another nobody you say ooo i have this one easy and dont prepare , you might not know that this guy wants it more than you then your humiliated
but... back to the situation , who actually took karate? if someone reads this tell me what you do in karate... , im clueless lol
abbott1 01-17-2008, 06:39 AM btw what style is it?
what do you meen?
hotnewton 01-17-2008, 06:45 AM it's better than doing nothing... if you have the time and money it can't hurt to try out... it'll help you improve shit so... go for it
nzjujitsu 01-17-2008, 09:55 AM worked for lyoto
Blunt Object 01-17-2008, 11:41 AM do it
Chickenjorge 01-17-2008, 01:31 PM yeahhh...just do it.
see if you like it. if you do it could be a very good thing, if not then it could be another experience and at least then you will know how it was, rather than wonder how it WOULD HAVE been.
nike it: "just do it"
Squirrel 01-17-2008, 03:02 PM Do it. There's absolutely nothing wrong with practicing Karate. It builds self confidence and gets you into shape. Also, sparring is a total blast and can be very addicting. There are also many tournaments with a variety of competitions. You could possibly meet some great people as well.
Since you are so young, I would have another family member check out the school and teacher before you agree to any contract or monthly fees.
Good luck!
nakedrear 01-17-2008, 07:35 PM lets see. allow me to give you a fair-minded response with sensitivity to the long and honorable traditions of traditional martial arts: NO.
you're better off garage-grappling and boxing with your buddies. I know a decent fighter who started this way. Between studying mma/grappling footage and just "doing it", he had a good grasp of basics when he came to our gym.
and why don't you wrestle, gad dammnit? that would be extremely beneficial. u do want to be the next ULTIMATE FIGHTER, don't you?

ninjashoes 01-19-2008, 11:38 PM check out what type of karate it is, some styles are super effective and can rival and even beat muay thai a high percentage of the time and others simply get destroyed by any real full contact striker
OH YEAH AND DEFINETLY GET INTO WRESTLING AS SOON AS POSSIBLE, GOTTA BE THE MOST IMPORTANT THING YOU CAN DO RIGHT NOW
alot of us are jealous, you are young enough to still have time to train hard and become a real MMA fighter

I'll tell you guys how it go's
Mr. Kringle 01-23-2008, 01:20 AM yeah im 15 and i was considering karate but im leaning toward either an mma academy or judo
tropicana619 01-29-2008, 10:31 AM Do it. You'll learn leadership when you get a higher rank and get to positively influence the little kids.
You also learn time-management and discipline, having to stick to a sport.
Also, in a couple of years, you'll get the opportunity to teach part-time, making bank, and basically you're just babysitting, but everyone's in front of you so it's easier. Also, if a kid gets hurt, not your fault - their parents signed responsibility contracts.
Do it.
prodigy 01-30-2008, 02:17 AM you should do it or give it a try
Alekhine_Lord 01-31-2008, 05:16 AM what do you meen?
That's various different styles of karate like Okinawan,Shotokan, Kyokushin, Hayashi-Ha, just to name a few. Some of them is a hybrid of other martial arts like Kyokushin which is a hybrid of kickboxing and karate while mostly are traditional like Shotokan karate.
Alekhine_Lord 01-31-2008, 05:20 AM Regarding the advice you wanted, I think you should join as traditional martial arts like karate and taekwando help you to get the basics in martial arts unless you have the prior experience in martial arts. And like nzjiujitsu says, it helps martial artists like Machida and even Georges St Pierre who credits most of his martial arts experience to karate. Good luck if you decide to join.
pimp777 02-06-2008, 03:39 PM yeah I would give it a try, most forms of karate are not very practical because of the strikes they want you to attempt. However, one great thing about Karate is that it will make you become more flexible which will help your BJJ if you ever start to train in that.
